The father Terrance McKeon will listed with his townland and parish of residence. Knowing the correct parish, you can have birth and marriage records looked up by the Heritage Center. When looking up "Mc" names ignore the Mc. McKeon is in the K pages, McCarthy in the C's, etc. Rachel Smith

    3. Hi listers! I am looking for a family of MCKEON. James was born somewhere in Langford in 1813. His parents were Terrance and Mary. James was transported to Tasmania in 1846 for sheep stealing. We have his descendants down to the present day, but cannot find where in Langford he came from. If this family looks familiar to you, please contact me. If you have any ideas as to how we might go about finding the family in Ireland - recommended sources registers etc. that would be great. TIA, Paddy Taylor (in the fabulous Bay of Plenty)

    3. Hi all I have had considerable success with the Longford Roots Heritage Centre. I've found it to be more successful (and cheaper) to ask one question at a time. One bit of information leads to another, as we all know ! Last year when I was in Ireland, I dropped in to see Longfords Roots. They said that they had nothing new for me - however, an elderly volunteer sitting in a corner said " Why don't you go and talk to the postman who used to handle the mail for Ballinalee; he is living in the Nursing Home just down the road" He knew all the Forbes family history and gave us precise directions how to find them. The road was built in the days of donkey carts but we bumped up it and found the old family farm. I now have a whole set of second cousins that I never knew existed, and a very frank description of my grandfather whom I never met. Sheila Forbes Ontario, Canada

    1. "Free" in Griffiths
    2. Does anyone know what it means when a person hold land as"Free" in Griffiths. Thi sterm must be different than regular formal outright ownership which is identified by the words "In fee". I have a vague recollection that Free means the person is some sort of legally recognized squatter but I'm not sure. Is there a source for official definition of terms used in Griffiths? Russ

The Church of Ireland no longer has its former support and may be open for services only on certain Sundays, with a rector who serves more than one parish. The churchyard may be fenced and gated. Write ahead and they'll be accommodating. The people are hospitable and glad to help, but they're part time or volunteers, just as in your own small town historical society. As to the cost, they're a bargain compared to professional searchers and a lot nicer about going the extra mile. Rachel Smith

My third great grandparents James and Jane Claffey came from Longford County, Ireland arriving in Port of New York in August of 1817. I believe that 4 of their 5 children came with them. John, Susannah, Thomas, and Mary. (Katherine was born later in USA.) Will provide more info , dates , possible other names if there is someone who will contact me. Had other research done there a few years ago and can snail mail copies of that over , too. Look forward to hearing from someone there. 2. Yes, price has gone up considerably in the last 18 months. A few months ago it was $70. A year & a half ago it was $42. I dont know the reason for the increase except that for a time Longford was one of the cheapest counties to search. You can print out the research form and cost at http://www.irishroots.net/Longford.htm

    3. Pat, Yes I did contact the Longford Heritage Center before my trip. They sent me the information about 6 weeks after I had sent them the money. I did not go there when I was in Ireland since they said they sent me all the information they could find - even though they had no record of my ggrandfather only his family. I have no idea who Nancy dealt with (I did not see her note) but as I said my inquiry was in 1998 their research prices may have gone up but that does seem high to me. ---------- >From: Colon <colon@nac.net> >To: IRL-LONGFORD-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: Accomodations in County Longford >Date: Tue, Feb 22, 2000, 1:21 AM > >Hello Pat, > >I noticed in your reply to Carol, you mentioned the Longford Roots at >the Longford Museum and Heritage Center. There were Gormans in many townlands of several parishes, Thomas being listed at Lisnageerah in Mostrim Ph. Interestingly there was an Honoria Gorman listed. The Longford Heritage Centre charge according to how much you ask them to look up. They have to go through a lot of records of baptisms and marriages of a lot of parishes. I thought i got a lot for my money. They would be able to sort out where the children were born. The record often tells who were the fathers of the bride and groom, sometimes the occupation. 3. Hello, I am trying to find information on the family of my great- grandfather, Patrick REARDON, from County Longford. He was born about 1855 to Patrick REARDON and Ellen GORMAN. He may have had a brother, Michael, and a sister, Kate. He emigrated to the US around 1889 and settled in Paterson, NJ. His first wife's name was Hannah or Nora (possibly Honorah) DONNELLY. I don't know if they married in Ireland or in the US. They had 2 children, Mary and John, both born in the 1890's in NJ. I saw the mention about the 2 David Leahy's and was wondering if anyone might know if there were any Reardon's listed. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Pat After his first wife's death, he married Mary DONOHUE, daughter of Thomas GORMAN and Ann GLEESON. I haven't had any luck finding any information on him or his parents in the IGI or on any of the films of BMD's for Longford that I ordered from the local LDS Family History Center.

    1. Locating townlands
    2. Rachel & Bob Smith
    3. Nancy, Tagshinny, Tennalick, and Carrickedmond are townlands in Tagshinny Parish, all right together. Abbeyshrule is in Abbeyshrule Parish nearby, just a little separated. You can find them on the map provided in David Leahy's Survivors of the Great Famine, an index of Longford families resident at the time of the Griffiths Valuation, 1854. All the families you mention are listed in this index with the names of the places they lived. (Your surmise that Thomas Levy lived in Tennalick is correct.) This book would be very useful to you or anyone trying to locate a County Longford family. For info find http://homepage.tinet.ie/~daveleahy/ My roadmap show Tagshinny to be a village about one mile east of the N55 on Longford L18A, roughly 20 miles south of Longford. Abbeyshrule lies about four miles east on the same road. This is an Ordnance Survey map of Longford-Roscommon. It's possible to order a copy in this country. One source is David Morgan, www.davidmorgan.com or 1-800-324-4934. The scale is one-half inch to the mile. You might also like to have the relevant Griffiths Valuation sheets for the families. The listings there will tell you how much land the families occupied, its quality, amount taxed and the name of the landlord. If it's very much land, there may turn out to be recorded deeds between the ancestor and landlord and then you are off to the races! To obtain these records write to National Archives Four Courts Dublin 7 Ireland Ask that you may pay in US funds. To order the returns you'll need to supply the names, parishes and townlands. It was recently four dollars per return, airmail postage. Or, if you'd just like to know what kind of a place the folks lived at, the Longford County Library would send you a photocopy of the relevant entries for the townlands in O'Donovan's Field Name Book. This was, as I understand and I'd be glad to be corrected if wrong, got up to accompany the Ordnance Survey mapping. An entry is a paragraph describing the size, land character, economic uses, presence of dwellings, antiquities and variant names and spellings of the place. You should send not one, but several International Response Coupons because a staff person has to make the copies and mail them. Have fun! Rachel Smith
