    2. Brian
    3. My wife's ancestor Alexander BURKE/BOURKE/BURK/BERK and his brother Thomas were born in Newtowncashel, Co. Longford, Ireland in the early 1840's. Emigrated to Coalton, Randolph County, VA/WV before 1860's. Their father's name was Michael. Mother was Mary ROWAN. Its possible that they also emigrated to Randolph County, Virginia in the 1840's-1850's. Any information on this family or connections will be appreciated. Brian

    1. [LONGFORD] O'Beirne, Hugh and Jane Finley O'Beirne
    2. I am seeking info on Hugh O'Beirne who was from Brianstown, Longford, about 1765 to 1835. He was married to Jane Finley, who was a schoolteacher. He was supposedly in the British Army in the late 1700's / early 1800's. I have been unable to find any trace of this family in Ireland and am hoping someone can give me some help. How and why would an Irishman be in the British Army? Are there any RC records from that area that go back that far and are still in existence? Is there a cemetery in and around Brianstown that someone could check for a stone containing the name Jane Finley O'Beirne? Why did these people leave, @1835? Hugh left with his sons and migrated to the U.S. We understand that Jane had died by that time. And he would have been in his 70's or 80's. Are there any O'Beirne's in the Brianstown area? My brother is planning a trip to Ireland next month and any suggestions or information that he should check on while there would be most welcome. Thank you for your help. Susan K. Spies

    1. [LONGFORD] Flood & Sexton
    2. John Rohde
    3. I am interested in tracing my Flood and Sexton ancestries of County Longford, Ireland. My great-great-grandparents James Flood (d. 23 May 1898) and Bridget Sexton (d. 27 Mar 1918) were from Derrycassan in the Parish of Columbkille (Lough Gowna). I do not know when they were married, but they had the following children (all born in Ireland): John; Hugh (b. 1861); Mary; Anne(b. 1865); Thomas (b. 1867); and Bernard (b.1873). I've only been able to find baptismal records for Hugh, Anne and Thomas and civil registration of births for Anne, Thomas and Bernard. I might add that Hugh Flood's godparents were a Bernard Sexton and a Mary Flood; that Anne Flood's godmother was a Judith Flood; and that Thomas Flood's godparents were a John Reilly and a Judith Coffey. The entire James Flood family eventually immigrated to the State of Colorado, U.S.A.. James Flood had a brother John who also came to Colorado. I know that John and James Flood also had a sister (name unknown) who married a Riley/Reilly because a nephew named Owen Riley resided in John Flood's household on the 1880 US Census of Colorado. Are these people familiar to anyone? Does anyone perhaps have Flood or Sexton relations or ancestries tied to the Parish of Columbkille (Lough Gowna), County Longford, Ireland? Or, does anyone have suggestions on how I might identify the parents of John Flood and/or Bridget Sexton? So far, Catholic parish records have not been any help. James and Bridget were probably born sometime in the 1820s or 1830s, decades before civil registration began in Ireland. Thank you for any help you can give me! John R. Rohde II

    3. Nancy: I dont know the name of the church, but in 1835 Carrickedmond was the place where the Catholic Church was, later there is other in Legan around 1850. I m tracing the Mac Cormacks and Mc Cormicks in the area. I went to this place in 1996. I saw the old Abbeyshrule cemetry where I found an old tomb of Mac Cormacks, I took a photo that is not readible. There was not time to check to much, and I didnot visit the new cemetry, that I think is working from 1840s. I tell you this because tombstones inscription is the source for pre 1835 research. I have the microfilm of Carrickedmond Parish Registers here in Argentina, I had copied all Mac Cormacks wedding, bapzism and deaths. I have some connection to the Burkes.3 nov. 1841 died Elizabeth Burk alias Mac Cormack de Cloonard ( from Cloonard ). Cloonard is a townland in this barony of Abbeyshrule or Shrule You see I only check for Cormacks and this information I m sending because the is a link to them. There was great if you can to check for me tombstones inscriptions in the new cemetry of Abbeyshrule when you ll go to Longford,. this is in front of the abbey and old cemetry. You see I m tracing the Mac Cormacks during years and when I got the parish registers I found out a lots of Mac Cormacks but the records doesnt give details of the person. For example in the death of Elizabeth that I m sending her age is missing. My ancestors Nicholas Cormack was born in 1814 many years before the rsgister start. But I found out in 1840 Nicholas Cormack marriage. I dont know why it only says (Nicholas Cormack de Doon) to Bridget Reynolds I also be gratefull if you check the towland of Killcurry in the area for Mac Cormacks, I think you can find out Mrs or widow Honor Mac Cormack ( may be a place called Doon, this palce is not a towland because the maps doesnt show it). She was my fourth grandmother (Honor Dalton Mac Cormack) I suggest you that check the Preservation of the memorials of the death. Thsi is a copy of old tombstones inscrptions of all Ireland. This books are in the National Library of Dublin. I dont know if the Mormons have it. May be under Tombstones inscrptions or Cametries. The listed persons that this books thave are not complete. They miss many inscriptions. Thanking you very much for your assitance and excuse my english, I speak spanish Be in touch Slainte Alberto Savaglia Cormack

    2. Have been enjoying the conversations back and forth, although none pertains to my families. Thought I'd mention the names I'm researching, just in case someone out there has a clue or two. Am researching McCAFFREY family - William came to Brooklyn NY before 1843. Also GANNON family - Ellen Catherine came with her family to Brooklyn NY in the 1820s. William and Catherine were married in Brooklyn in early 1840s. Only clue to Irish heritage found so far - in dispension papers, first daughter born in County Longford. Did both families, in fact, come from there? Other families of interest to me are HOGAN and GRADY. No clue thus far as to county of origin in Ireland - but they were married there, so when I find one, I will find the other! My greatgrandmother HOGAN married McCAFFREY. Any help greatly appreciated - Pat Kemper Golden CO USA

Judith and list, Catholic Clergy are listed in the "The Catholic Directory, Almanack and Registry" which has been issued annually from 1836. I believe it lists priests alphabetically by diocese and gives their parishes. So all you need is a good library <s>. If you give your location someone on the list may be able to suggest one. 1. [LONGFORD] Sacred Heart Church in Ireland
    2. Carol Mounts
    3. Nancy, See by your post that you are traveling to Ireland in May and will visit the church of the Sacred Heart. Where is it located???? My reason for asking -- My husband and I are going to Longford County in June. My third great grandparents James and Jane Claffey came from Longford County arriving in Port of New York in August 1817. They lived for a while in Huntingdon Co Pa before moving on and settling here in Washington County, Pa. They are both buried (with readable tombstones) here in Donegal Township, Washington County, Pa in old Donegal Catholic Cemetery. See web URL http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~camounts/donegalcem.htm This Catholic Community early on, built a St James Church which was forerunner of the present Sacred Heart in Claysville Pa. Wonder if there is a connection ??? Carol Ann Claffey Mounts > >Do you know what church your ancestors attended? My BURKE family was from >Carrickedmund also, civil parish of Taghshinny. The records for that church begin in 1835 and are on microfilm with the Mormons. I have the film on order at my local Family History Center - I would be happy to check any of your names when the film comes in. I also have the Griffith's Valuation index on CD that I would be happy to check for you, although there is not much info to be had from the index. I am going to Ireland in May. 3. A Reverend Radigan performed a marriage ceremony in 1840 for Alexander MCDONALD and Ellen CONNOLLY somewhere, somewhere in County Longford. Can anyone tell me the names of any Catholic churches who had a Rev. Radigan in this time frame? The couple went to NYC in the mid-1840s and raised a family, until Alex abandoned them in 1857. Their two oldest sons fought on the Union side in the American Civil War. I found this information in an affadavit by Ellen when she applied for a pension, after her unmarried son was killed in battle. It's my only clue as to where in County Longford this family came from. Any clues? Judith Haller jhaller@io.com
