    3. Hi Joyce, Wish we were going along :-) My husband and I just returned in June. Had a fantastic time !! My message below..... Joyce wrote >Dear Longford Listers - coming to Ireland October 2000. >Also, we arive in Dublin around 2:30 pm. Is it reasonable to assume we can >rent a car and get to Longford the same afternoon. Would we be better to say >in Dublin or close proximity and then start out?? > >Any recommended spots in Dublin area or Longford? Joyce, .... If you plan to drive, you do have more options than we did. We became quite intimidated by driving on left side of road in England, long before we got to Ireland. We went from Dublin to Longford Town, county seat of Longford County, by train. Cost was about $30.00 (as opposed to $100.00 per day car rental). Train trip took about 3/4 hours. Train station is about 4/5 blocks from Longford Arms Hotel. A very lovely Hotel !! It runs about $100.00 a day including a large breakfast. Has a dinning room but also has a famous "Coffee Dock" snack shop which has quite reasonable and large portion meals and very friendly staff. Would go back tomorrow and probably will return in a year or two. Went by taxi (cost about $80.00) for an afternoon to Clonmacnoise. Want to spend more time there next time. Can give more advice if you contact me privately. If not HAVE A GREAT TRIP. Carol Ann Claffey Mounts in Washington PA USA

    3. Hi Joyce, I went to Ireland in May, with my Dad. We landed at Shannon at 6:30 am and drove to Galway City. I think Dublin to Longford would be comparable in distance. I had no trouble getting off the plane, renting a car and driving (on the 'other' side of the road) right away. Also, the road that runs between Galway and Dublin (in Galway they called it the Dublin road, in Dublin perhaps it's the Galway road) is a very large, well-kept highway - easy to drive on, that's the road you take to Longford. Perhaps staying in Dublin one night might be fun, but driving to Longford is definitely reasonable. My Dad and I visited Longford, my ancestors are from Tennelick in south County Longford. I must tell you, it felt eerily familiar. I just loved it. I had never been there before, but now can't wait to go back. Have a blast - the Guiness is fabulous there - not like here in the US. Good luck. He found two Knight households, maybe same as McKnights. (I have noticed that families were variable about using an Mc, O or going plain.) James Knight was at Cornadowagh in Cashel Parish, Margaret at Carrowroe in Rathcline. These places are fairly close together. Rachel Smith >>

    2. Christina, I was glad to hear about the church records transcription to online. Your work will certainly make it much easier for some of us to look for our ancestors in County Longford Ireland. I am still looking for any records of James and Ann Nedley who left County Longford Ireland around 1853 to come to the USA. Their graves are in Apalachicola, Fl. Thank you, Paul Betros

As Jan said you can visit the site at: www.rootsweb.com/~irllog Be careful when you are searching. These records are taken from typed transcriptions and spellings vary. We are not correcting strange spellings. We are updating the records as they come in so keep checking back. We would love new volunteers! Many hands lighten the load and all that. So, if you would like to help us get some actual data online for all Co Longford researchers please drop my a line. When this project is finished if we have the interest in continuing we will cast about for something else to do. We are also putting your research online. If you have transcribed all of a name in a set of records (all the Caseys in a Parish record for instance) you can send me the data in text format and we will happily place it online where it might be of help to someone. Please tell me the source. Thanks! Come see us... Christina
