Someone at [email protected] writes: << According to the web site at http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/placenames/index.cfm it looks like Foslongford is in the civil parish of Kilcommock >> I think I'm going to stick with my earlier letter. I've tried the above URL three times, and get nothing (as with Christina). The seanruad site doesn't mention it. My Excel files of all of the townlands don't show it. It's not on the Discovery maps, and my Townland Index maps - which show all of the townlands and their borders - don't show a Foslongford anywhere in or near the civil (or RC) parish of Kilcommock. The only Google reference is the one mentioned by Christina and, from looking at this list on the Longford website, I think everything there is suspect. Just in the first few entries, we have listings such as Balanock and Bolahare. Balanock is probably Ballyknock, but I can't decipher Bolahare. So I certainly wouldn't trust the Foslongford entry, either. Some of these possibly are local names for areas within actual townlands. 2. Sean at [email protected] writes: << born in 1865 at Fos Longford in the district of Ballymahon. Cannot find Foslongford on the map >> Sean, Without some other information on possible nearby placenames of other family members, I can only suggest the townland of Furze. It is in the civil parish of Rathreagh in the PLU of Ballymahon (about the same as district, I guess). It would take some odd speech and/or listening habits to convert Furze into Fos.......... but this is Ireland, where all things are "possible" (nay, "probable"). There is a Faus in Co. Roscommon, but in the wrong part and not near the Longford border. Nothing in Westmeath, either. You don't have anything in the way of BMD info for John Derwin's relatives? That might help with the location - especially if it's not a townland name. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    3. Hello list Is anyone researching Ward or Rogers family? I am looking for information about: Samuel and Sarah Ward born about 1800ish. Daughters Martha and Ann Ward born in Ireland in 1820's Samuel was a mariner. John and Jane Rogers born about 1800. Daughter Emily born around 1829 Ireland. John a Mariner. Both families went to Liverpool and were there by 1833 when Sarah Ward and Benjamin Rogers were born. They are my Great grand parents. I found a reference to a Sarah Ward (snr) about the right age (73)from Longford Ireland on the 1871 census. I don't know if it my Sarah but like to find out. She was living with her Grandchildren John Black and Frances Black (Who I think was Ward)and their son Alexander. If any one can help me confirm or deny that would be good. If anyone has any ideas to help me I would appreciated it. Carolyn

    2. Hi Dave, I noticed the name Gertrude in your family. I have a Gertrude E. Byrne born in Longford but I haven't as yet been able to tie her to anyone on the list. I think her father was Patrick Byrne. Her brother was John Byrne who moved to the Birmingham area of England. It's a long shot but there may be a connection as there are not too many Gertrude first names coming from Longford as I know. If anyone else on the list has a Gertrude from Longford in there family name between before1880, would you be kind enough to drop me a line. [email protected] All the Best, Paul Broughton

    3. Hi Paul, Yes, my grandmother was Mary Gertrude Creamer, born 1868 in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. Her parents were William Creamer, born 1820 in Co. Longford, and Mary Tamlyn. She was known all her life as "Minnie." She was the last of 9 children, so I suspect they were running out of names, and picked up "Gertrude" from a slightly distant relative or in-law (or movie star). You're right, the name is a bit unusual and could give us some new clues. Stay in touch. Dave Myers At 06:09 AM 9/6/2004, you wrote: >Hi Dave, >I noticed the name Gertrude in your family.
