Sunshine - yes please Ivy, but only up to Christmas Eve, then will will need some snow from another kind 'lister' - in London now the rain is lashing down in buckets the wind is blowing, it is cold and horrible. Merry Christmas and every good wish to Christina and the other members of our Longford List. Best regards Mary Wall. Ivy Trott <[email protected]> wrote: Are dragons worse than brick walls? reposted with permission: --- Original Message --- From: "Carol Granville" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> CO. LONGFORD DOUBLE MURDER IN LONGFORD--APRIL 21--On yesterday a man named CORRIGAN and his wife, residing midway between Drumlish and Ballinamuck, in this county, were shot by an assassin who has not been yet rendered amenable to justice. The cold blooded murder is presumed to have originated in that which has been the cause of so many outrages in the same locality--land. CORRIGAN was married to a daughter of a man named MANNING, the bailiff of the Ballinamuck estate, which is the property of the Hon. King HARMAN. A short time since MANNING procured some land from which a tenant had been evicted. CORRIGAN was shot within a few yards of his own door, at about eight o'clock in the morning. The assassin then stepped forward to the house, and deliberately shot the wife. The poor woman is not dead, but there is no hope of her recovery. Her depositions have been taken by Henry CRAWFORD, Esq., R.M. The Constabulary have arrested several persons. Mrs. CORRIGAN has named the man who shot her. CORRIGAN was a respectable man. His body was found in the garden before his house--"Mail." [A man named ROSS was arrested on Tuesday and identified by Mrs. CORRIGAN, who expired on Wednesday.] ------------------------------------------ County Cavan Newspaper Transcription Project

Jim, my ancestors came from Longford how does this DNA stuff on the female side? and what sort of cost are we looking at? Kesa

The topic of DNA is closed on this list until further notice. If you want to write directly to Jim I imagine he will not mind. You can contact me offlist about this if you wish. Christina
Jim I would love to do a dna study for Longford families, but being female the only test I can do is the mtdna, which won't show my Irish roots, since they go through my mother's father's mother. My brothers are my half brothers, so their y-dna would only show their father's traits (my stepfather). I have one male cousin who *might* consider the y-dna test ... but ... the link to Ireland (for him) is through his father's father's mother ... would the Irish links show up? I have updated the Ireland list with another 50 books, many with lookup volunteers. The types of books include parish history, local history, Ireland history, and genealogy books. You can access these lists by going to the URL below my name. On my homepage, at the top under Ireland, click on Ireland Books. This will take you to the Ireland Book Discussion Mailing List website. Hi Christina, You just need a spreadsheet program I scan and email the images. I am an intermediate user with computers and software, I can not only build a computer but can also troubleshoot, I am profficient with all Office programmes and graphic design software especially coral draw, I also do photo restorations and have a scanner. . So, you do need access to a Family History Center. I am a paid member of Caboolture Family History Centre. So lets get started ha ha, I also love family research and can understand a lot of dcuments. Looking forward to helping you Kesa
Ellen & Kesa, You don't need to be near a Family History Center (Mormon) in order to transcribe the images I provide. You just need a spreadsheet program like Excel or Microsoft Works. I scan and email the images. To do the transcribing from a film of your choice, you have to be able to get to the film. So, you do need access to a Family History Center. Hope that helps. The way to check on which townlands are on a film is to go to the Family History Library search page: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Plug the number of the film in the box where it says Fiche or Film search. The page that comes up will have a list of the parishes on the film. Now click on the Parish you are interested in. Or one by one click on them all. Now click on the VIEW FILM NOTES button in the upper right hand corner. One of the films will go with your film number. For instance the film we are doing now is #0846677. The description reads: 1901 D.E.D. 6/1, 21-23; D.E.D. 7/1-3, 19 Now scroll down looking for the 1911 films that match those D.E.D. numbers. 1911 Ballymahon D.E.D. 6/1 Townland: Cornacarta. 1911 Ballymahon D.E.D. 6/21-23 Townlands: Knappoge, Lislom, Tipper. 1840141 1911 Cashel East D.E.D. 7/1-3, 19 Townlands: Derryglogher, Derrynaskea, Derryoghil, Corlea. The 1911 census description gives the townland names, so that is how you can figure out which townlands are on a 1901 film. IF - you are starting from scratch to locate your film, you do a PLACE search instead of a Fiche or Film Search. Put in the name of the parish your townland is in. If you don't know the parish - use the Townland database to find the parish. http://www.seanruad.com I hope this all makes sense. It works. Christina, Is there a map that would define the townlands that are in the film that I'm going to get for transcription? I know that Gurteen and Edera are on it but I'd also like to know the other townlands on that film just to make sure that we aren't doubling up when the transcription begins. Thanks, Susan Mulledy
