Dear List, My James Kiernan and his wife Catherine Lennon had three children, Mary 1820, James 1822 and Catherine 1826 all native of Co. Longford. However in 1828 James was caught housebreaking in Co. westmeath and sentenced to 7 years transportation. On the shipping indents he is described as soldier guard/labourer. What exactly does this mean? Was he in the militia? Would the family have been living in Co. Westmeath or Co. Longford? What would a soldier guard be doing in Westmeath at this time? Any help appreciated cheers Maureen
Maureen, We have some militia/RIC data online. For what it's worth - I don't see any Kiernans. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllog/military.htm Christina On Thu, 20 Jan 2005 13:18:18 +1000, saljem wrote: | My James Kiernan and his wife Catherine Lennon had three children, | Mary 1820, James 1822 and Catherine 1826 all native of Co. | Longford. Hello, My GG grandfather was George Pratt. His death certificate states that he married Ann McCann about 1868 in Longford, Ireland. Searching through civil registrations here in Australia, I have not been able to find record of this marriage. I am trying to find information about their children George born approx. 1872 and Elizabeth born 1875. George was a private with King's Own Hussars (14th). Does anyone know about this regiments history in Longford? Ann was born in 1850. Her father was John Hugh McCann, a Sea Captain and her mother was Elizabeth Cox. I am interested to find any information about Ann's birth or her parents. Your help is appreciated, Regards, Julie.
Hi there, I have just uploaded the 1901 census for the townland of Toome. It is in Taghshinny parish in the Barony of Shrule. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllog/census/index.htm I should get a chance to copy some of Longford town on Saturday. Barring a snow "event" which could happen. Thanks to our transcribers for all their work on this project. We also have some new ones joining us and we are glad to have their help. Regards, Christina

local C of I stands for Church of Ireland
Don I could really picture that scene in my mind, and think yes you did the wisest thing leaving had a good laugh about it Kesa
Good morning everyone: [LDS Record] Can anyone comment on the following and what the local C of I and cemetery would have been at the time for the following? Macklin John ~ Granard ~ 3 ~ 157 ~ 68 ~ 1869 Co Longford North Eric Macklin
I paraphrase this from the late Pete McCarthy's book, "McCarthy's Bar". During the Troubles the British hear a rumour that Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley are holding secret talks in a hotel in Donegal. Seeing the opportunity to end their headaches they insert an SAS sniper across the road. The sniper's waiting is eventually over when he see's Adams and Paisley walking out but in between them is the singer Daniel O'Donnell. This gave the SAS sniper a bit of a problem as he had only been issued with two silver tipped bullets - so he shot Daniel O'Donnell twice. be lucky Sean
My dad said never take the bait unless you have an advantage<GRIN>which I clearly did not. It was funny later, but not at the time. As the January blahs have set in, it seems like time for humor week is upon us. So, starting on Saturday Jan 22- Saturday Jan 29th, you can commence sending your saved up jokes to the list. GROUND RULES! In the subject line put [HUMOR] or [HUMOUR] as the case may be. Then those not interested can skip those messages I prefer the topics be Irish or Genealogy humor. *Keep within the bounds of good taste - sort of :) *No political jokes. *No "swear" words. After January 29th jokes will again be considered OFF TOPIC. Thanks, Christina Listowner IRL-TIPPERARY & IRL-LONGFORD

Not a joke with respect to enjoying it, but a few years ago dropped into a pub in the town of Leixlip (sp) County Kildare, to see what Guinnis (sp) tasted like. There was a bunch of noisy Irishmen inside, toasting the local football team, toasting about anything that could be toasted. One spotted me as a stranger right away and commenced to make a toast to the visitor. As I sat down at the bar, two of them three sheets in the wind I detected, sat down on each side of me......the one on the left with his nose practically in my ear, asked, "will you have a brew on us." I carefully, very carefully, allowed it was a neighborly act which I would greatfully accept. "Ah" upon hearing my voice "we have an American here. What is your name Sir." I answered Kelly and the immediate area became quiet for an uncomfortable length of time. "Be ye related to our Kelly's here? Fine football player one." The other said, "There is the Kellys on the river. They build boats. Then there is Doctor Kelly." A third chipped in, "Biggest thieves in all of Kildare." More uncomfortable silence. Well I finished my drink bought a round, went to the restroom where I still am, having used the facility and promptly walked out the back door unseen. I imagine if I stayed there would have errupted a really big bru ha. I pictured an American in their jail and felt it the better part of valor to quietly leave. hugs around Don Kelly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christina Hunt" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 17, 2005 8:32 AM Subject: [LONGFORD] 2nd semi annual Humor/Humour week Jan. 22-29th > As the January blahs have set in, it seems like time for humor week is > upon > us. > So, starting on Saturday Jan 22- Saturday Jan 29th, you can commence > sending > your saved up jokes to the list. > > GROUND RULES! > In the subject line put [HUMOR] or [HUMOUR] as the case may be.
