Ponc thar bhar, a Shéamuis. Agus ag an am (leath deireanach den 19ú hAois, ba é Cathair Nua-Eabhraic an áit ina raibh an uimhir is mó de Ghaeilgeoirí ar an domhan. Agus bhí Gaeilge dúchasach sa chathair sin le linn níos mó ná 3 ghlúin le Ghaeilgeoirí rugtha agus tógtha i Nua-Eabhrac. Ní ionadh mar sin gur cloiseadh 'd' leathan do 't' leathan, agus a mhalairt, díreach mar a deirtear i nGaeilge. Excellent point, James. And at the time (last half of the 19th century), New York City had more Irish speakers than any other city in the world. And Irish Gaelic was native to the city for more than 3 generations of Irish Gaelic speakers born and bred in New York. No wonder that broad 'd' was heard for broad 't', and vice versa, exactly as they are pronounced in Irish. There's a very good reason that the soundex groups T& D together -- Listeners often mishear either consonant for the other, especially if the better educated "English speaking" official was taking the verbal report from a rural less educated Irish farmer. My example -- I have found the surname Dator as Tator in both a census and city directory in the late 1800s in Mew York City -- and they were born in NYC so it wasn't a problem of a foreign accent.
