    3. Hi Joan I had a bit of a nose around for you as I too have Irish ancestors who went to India. Interestingly, but irrelevant, I found another Thomas Sims in the 1st Madras Fusiliers who died on the same day and in the same cholera epidemic as my great, great grandfather - this in 1857 so not your guy. I've found making the link back to Ireland from India very difficult - still haven't achieved it with my O'Kelly ancestor as no father's name on his marriage details. After years of trying might have partially nailed McCarthy and that was through ploughing through Muster Books at the National Archives. Trouble is, his first name is John and though he enlisted at Limerick he could have come from anywhere. I hope a Sims relative sticks their head over the parapet, but I fear you are in it for the long haul! Joss From: "Joan Birtles" <joanbirtles@bigpond.com> Subject: [IRL-LIMERICK] SIMS name in LIMERICK To: <IRL-LIMERICK@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <005701cd1649$6ea39390$4beabab0$@com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I am new to the list and hope that someone may have information on an Anthony SIMS who was baptized 3 Dec 1820 at St Munchin, Limerick, Limerick with his father's name of Hugh and mother Lucy or Lucinda. My search for an Anthony SIMS began in Madras India when a Thomas SIMS aged 23 married my ggg aunt Lydia Thorpe in 1863 in Madras with his father shown as Anthony.

    3. Hi Joss and thank you for your interest and reply. I had another Irishman, my gg grandfather John Lynch born Co Clare who joined the HEIC in 1848 and sailed for Madras but I was lucky that on his marriage record to my gg grandmother in 1851 his place of birth was Co Clare and then I found his Embarkation Record [LDS films] from England to Madras on the "Elizabeth" which gave his age, birthplace, occupation and personal features. That was many years ago, but I could never find when he, his wife and infant daughter, my g grandmother arrived in NSW Australia although I knew it was about 1853. It was only early last year [after about 20 years] that I found the family arrived on the "William Prowse" in 1853. This I found through his gaol record in Sydney, [via NLA Trove newspaper site] not a nice way to have found him, but his gaol description record tallied with his army record. John joined the army in Exeter where I believe a lot of Irish men went to join. Have you looked at Embarkation Records or the FIBIS site www.fibis.org I've plenty of patience, sometimes :-} will keep persevering with my search for Thomas Sims and his father. Kind regards and I hope you find your Irishmen also. Joan Hi Joan I had a bit of a nose around for you as I too have Irish ancestors who went to India.
