Chris, Sandmen used to dredge the floor of the Shannon and Abbey rivers for the sand that was used in most of the building works in Limerick city until the beginning of the last century. They had their on style of boat called a Sandcot, with a flat base that helped transporting the sand. They mostly lived in the Abbey area of the city which was in St. Mary's Parish, They lived along side another group The Abbey Fishermen, and although the two families intermarried they didn't always get along as the sand dredging would disturb the fishing areas.
