I have an ancestor who lived and died in South Africa. Her Death Notice there shows that she was born 'in Ireland', that her parents were James and Mary Childerhouse, and I know her birthdate - 1816. I also know that she went to SA with her husband who was a soldier, and I have found her marriage certificate in Cork records. Her name was Ellen Childerhouse, and the only Childerhouse's I can find are in Limerick, but none of the above mentioned. It is possible that James was related to the Limerick Childerhouse's and that any record of him there may no longer exist. I have also found that the Childerhouse name is most prevalent in Norfolk. It is my guess that he may have been a soldier and could have been stationed in Ireland at the time of Ellen's birth, but there are no military records for him that I can find. I hope someone may be able to come up with a theory, or a course of research that I may have missed, as I am stymied!
