    1. [IRL-LIMERICK] KEARNEY/CARNEY

    3. Hi there I'm someone out there can help me. My great great grandmother Bridget Kearney/Carney age 18 came over from Ireland to South Africa in 1861 on the ship the Coldstream II. With her on the ship were Edmond/Edmund Kearney age 22 (they were both single), John age 26 with his wife Mary 25 (maiden name unknown). I don't know if they were siblings or cousins. Opposite the entry for John it shows FROM: LIMERICK. They were all coming to a Patrick Kearney in Port Elizabeth. Now.Patrick Kearney age 24 came over with his wife Catherine Shaughnessy age 20 on the ship Tudor in 1860 (so this is the one the above came over to). With them on the ship were James Kearney age 26 and Margaret Dwyer (they only married after they arrived). There was also a John Kearney age 27 from Nicolas Street, Limerick that came over in 1864 to a Mary Kearney in Port Elizabeth. I have found a Death Notice here for James Kearney and Margaret Dwyer but they have recorded it as CARNEY. I'm not sure if maybe the Irish pronunciation made them write it as it sounded. Margaret was present at his death but she couldn't write so she made her mark with an X. On his Death Notice it states that he was from Broadford Co. Clare and his parents are recorded as Michael Carney and Mary Naughton. I am convinced that they are all related as the marriages and baptisms that took place for all them at the St Augustine's Catholic Church in Port Elizabeth show them as witnesses to these events. I am desperately trying to find out who Bridget's parents were and where she was born and baptised. The fact that Limerick is mentioned makes me think that maybe the whole family came from there. All help will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Patty
