Vicki, IFHF (Rootsireland.ie) has a total of 10 Catherine Collins born in Ireland in 1855: 06 in Co Limerick 01 in Co Cavan 01 in Co Kilkenny 01 in Co Offaly 01 in Co Antrim One of these I know you know about because you posted previously at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/IRL-LIMERICK/2010-03/1268538359 That Catherine Collins was born 28 Feb 1855 in DROMCOLLIHER & BROADFORD (RC) parish to Thomas Collins and Deborah Sullivan with sponsors Tim McAuliffe and Maria Sullivan. Did you ever follow up and rule this set of parents IN or OUT for "your" Catherine? I found a rather odd marriage record for a Thomas Collins and Debora Sullivan in the same parish. I say odd only because IF this couple are the parents of the child Catherine born 28 Feb 1855 in Dromcolliher, then the child was born out of wedlock because the marriage didn't occur until 1860. However, with such two common names as Collins and Sullivan it could very well be that this couple are not the parents of the Catherine born 1855 despite them having wed in the same parish where she was born. Also on http://www.harrybishop.ca/~familytree/738.htm you mention the family story again stating that Catherine's parents immigrated to Canada, the father passed and then her mother was murdered and that Catherine and her siblings were split up and cared for by other families. Have you tried climbing the family tree 'sideways' so to speak by tracking Catherine's sibling's records to see if any of them mention or give ANY names for their parents? I think in order to find that 1932-42 newspaper article you are going to have to have something else (a place name in Canada or Ireland, or a first name for Catherine's mother or father) in order to dig that one out! But about Catherine's mother being murdered...had to occur between 1855 and 1871 - (when your Catherine shows up in the same household as Annette Duffy) and I'd assume that since it was a murder that there would have to be an official coroner's report on the death. Have you tried looking for these? Do you have any idea where the murder occurred? If so perhaps there is a mention of it in local newspapers? Researching orphans is always tough, I've got quite a few in my family lines too, and the funny thing is we have almost exactly the same family 'tale' as you in my HOLLAND line about receiving notice of an estate matter that needed to be cleared up, but despite correspondence being sent that the estate never was heard from again. I'm trying to crack through one very stubborn brick wall regarding my Great Great Grandmother Catherine Collins. My Grandmother recalls that there was a notice in the newspaper (here in Canada) from a lawyer for law firm in Ireland looking for Catherine or her descendants. The notice was posted when she was a girl so it would have been sometime between 1932-1942. We believe this was in regard to the estate of Catherine's maternal Grandfather (who's first or last name we do not know). We also don't know what part of Ireland her Grandfather would have been from (and thus where these lawyers would have been located). Unfortunately all we know is that the notice was seen, a response was sent but no one here in Canada ever heard back. My Grandmother would so desperately like to know more about Catherine Collins and I've been trying to help her through all the traditional routes. I happened to be on this board for a different family branch and thought I would put it out there. Does any one know if there is a central place one can look regarding unclaimed Irish estates? We're not concerned about the estate it's self but would love to know more about Catherine's mother's family. I thought if there was a way to do a search on Catherine's name (listed as an heir in the will) we might be able to find something. It's a long shot I know. Thanks so much!
