    3. Hello Patty, I also have South African Irish ancestors and when I started my research I had no idea how/when/why they had come to the Eastern Cape. It turns out they they all came as military men. However that was some 30 years before your dates so it may not be the same in your case. Have you investigated that line of inquiry? Hope it's not TOO hot in Durban today - really freezing here. But you can contact Helena at the Catholic Diocese - email address: archives@aerosat.co.za . She will look up for you but they charge R80.00 per person per parish. Can get quite pricey. That's how I got all my marriage and baptism records. She will need dates though so if you can give her those, she will be too happy to do it for you. I also have a "French Connection" so to speak. My aunt says that my other great great grandmother was a LaTouche, originally from France and then Ireland. Well there are loads of LaTouche's in Ireland, mainly Dublin, but I can't find an Anne Maria. I even contacted the Latouche legacy but they have no trace of her either. Another brick wall. I'm also looking for a William Hughes (my great great grandfather) who was also from Ireland but where in Ireland I have no idea. I don't know why he ended up here either. He married Bridget Kearney/Carney. And so the mystery continues...................... Regards Patty -----

    3. Hi Jennifer I don't think William Hughes was in the military. If he was no one has ever mentioned it, but maybe I should have a look anyway. Thanks for that idea. His son John, born in Port Elizabeth, was a blacksmith. I have a record of William on the PE Census of 1875 which states him as being a labourer. The Carney/Kearney all came over with the Aided Immigration to the Cape. This elusive Anne Maria LaTouche - well she is something else. I don't think we will ever find her. Was very hot and humid this morning but the wind has picked up and it looks like we are going to have some rain. Thank heavens!!! Yesterday was about 35 degrees - just as well we have aircon.
