    1. [IRL-LIMERICK] Can anyone help with my problem?
    2. Jennifer Smit
    3. I am hoping that someone can come up with an idea to help me with this problem. I have an ancestor who lived and died in South Africa. Her Death Notice there shows that she was born 'in Ireland', that her parents were James and Mary Childerhouse, and I know her birthdate - 1816. I also know that she went to SA with her husband who was a soldier, and I have found her marriage certificate in Cork records. Her name was Ellen Childerhouse, and the only Childerhouse's I can find are in Limerick, but none of the above mentioned. It is possible that James was related to the Limerick Childerhouse's and that any record of him there may no longer exist. I have also found that the Childerhouse name is most prevalent in Norfolk. It is my guess that he may have been a soldier and could have been stationed in Ireland at the time of Ellen's birth, but there are no military records for him that I can find. I hope someone may be able to come up with a theory, or a course of research that I may have missed, as I am stymied! Thank you - and a Happy New Year to the list Jennifer Smit Folkestone, Kent

    3. Jennifer, I found an obit for your Ellen Childerhouse Collopy Goold that states specifically that Ellen was born 1816 in LIMERICK. Transcription of Obituary: DIED. GOOLD -- At King William's Town, South Africa, Ellen Goold (alias Collopy, born Childerhouse,) widow of Patrick Mahony Goold, M.L.A., born at Limerick, Ireland, 1816. Source: Genealogybank.com; Newspaper:Irish American Weekly; New York, NY; Sat 28 Apr 1888; Vol. 40; No. 16; Page 7. NOTEs: M.L.A. could be Military Legislative Assistant? or Member of the Legislative Assembly? I note from a very old post of yours in the Rootsweb Goold Mailing list [Ref http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GOOLD/2010-02/1265363508] that you noted that Patrick Mahony Goold was a member of Parliament, so the Member of the Legislative Assembly kind of makes sense? Will send copy of the newspaper image to you at your <jayarsmit@ntlworld.com> address shortly. Took a look at all the CHILDERHOUSE baptisms available at rootsireland.ie to see if I could find Ellen or any possible siblings based on your noting that her parents were James and Mary Childerhouse, but came up empty. Will attach the notes on these CHILDERHOUSE baptisms here for you to look at in case anything jumps out at you (and to get the info into the list archives so that it will be searchable for anyone else looking for CHILDERHOUSE info in future). [Already did the work, seems a shame to waste it.] I've grouped them by County, then by parish, then loosely by what appear to me to be possible sibling groups; these groupings may or may not be correct so take w/ a grain of salt!!! You will see question marks for the mother's maiden names as it is not possible to look these up unless you have the surname and the EXACT spelling as it is entered into rootsireland.ie's system. Anyone wondering how I pulled these index records at Rootsireland.ie, please see my tutorial at: http://tinyurl.com/6m525b7 ========================= CHILDERHOUSE Baptisms/Birth Records for ALL Ireland from Rootsireland.ie 29 matches for Childerhouse (plus variants) 26 are spelled Childerhouse 03 are spelled CHILDERHOSE [see Co Limerick parish of KILKEEDY (CI)] 01 of these is in County Dublin North 01 of these is in County Monaghan 27 of these are in County LIMERICK ================================= County Dublin North Church Baptism Childerhouse, Frances 1849 Parish: ST.PAUL'S ARRAN QUAY (RC) Father: John Childerhouse Mother: Catherine ?
