Thank you Steve!! Well stated and better than I could say it. Another genealogy truth is records are only as good as the information originally recorded or the recorder. For example. On one of my relatives, I found three different birth dates; two of them were from the same church records! She supposedly lived in two different states at the same time, and had a wrong death year by 7 years! I was lucky I knew the right dates as this family was educated and kept their records and have a copy of the Bible pages. None of the incorrect info was from the LDS Records but out of sources from other genealogical libraries and census records. Genealogy is not an exact science. And so very important that you list all those dates as well as the sources they came from. Cannot stress the importance of recording sources! Those who are new to it need to keep that in mind, many are not as diligent and stop at the first date they find and assume that is the truth. If I have learned something in 50 years of information gathering, it is the following: People are human, and many people were not educated and did not keep track of when family members were born, married or died. And in the case of my husband's family who were Irish Catholic, another problem is that his parents lied to keep him and his siblings from finding out about the first marriage, because it was only to get them US Citizenship. The same applies to his 3 of his 4 uncles that came here. Many factors affect dates, in those sources, many deeply personal. Many dates will always be estimated, but be able to say why and show your sources, unless you have sure knowledge of the information. Candace Punch
