To Eleen and Megan Im sorry you dont like the discussion about the mormon records, but I disagree I think it is genealogy related. I would seriously like to know how thet get their information. I dont know, but it would seem to me, that if we ( or I, at least) knew then maybe we could do our own research the same way, and maybe with more accurate resuts. I felt I had a valid question in asking. Without trying to sound mean, thats what the delete key is for, if you dont like the subject you dont have to read it. Which is a good point that Ron had made. I often delete without reading it because the subject is not something Im nterested in or the surnames dont relate to mine. Im sure Ive missed things by doing that, but oh well... Cris Atwater California p.s it wouldnt matter if Padraig approved or disapproved, the list often disgreed with him. He was of great help to me though, and is missed.
I don't know the hows or whys of the LDS filming all the old church and civil records, but do know that more recently in Slovakia and the Czech Republic they were in negotiations for a number of years to be allowed to film. The Czech Republic did not allow filming, Slovakia did. It seems to me I recall reading that they provide the filming (preservation) free for the privilege of using the records in whatever manner they see fit. A copy of the filmed records is also provided to the institution. Indexing is another story. If the LDS indexes the records, they then own the index. That's all I have to say on this subject.
