I am trying to fill out my g grandparents genealogy story by getting some idea of the area where they lived, worked and worshiped. My g grandmother was a servant in a house on Arthur's Quay or in that area; Francis Street. She was Catholic and worshiped at St. Michael's church. My g grandfather was a seaman who worshiped at St. Mary's church and lived on Mary Street. He was English and Protestant. The time line was approx. 1860 1863. The year of their Civil Marriage was 1862 in Limerick City. She was living in County Clare, Ennis Town, Mill Street when she delivered their first child in 1864. They emigrated to USA in 1868. We have visited the area twice when going 'home' to Mayo & Wexford but it is now so built up, it is hard to imagine it 150 yrs. ago. Was it a upper class area even if it was on the Quay? Was it a "rough" place with pubs and houses of ill repute? If a 16 yr. old girl listed her occupation as servant, where would she have worked?? Mary Ellen Chambers
