    3. Hi Kerry, Just read your post regarding look-ups of Bounty Immigrations. My family, Bourke (Burke) John and wife Jane (Nolan) immigrated from Limmerick to Geelong Australia sometime between 1840 and 1842. To find when and how they immigrated has been a brick wall for many years. If you would check your record I would be very appreciative. Thanks, Jane, Lemoore, Ca. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry" <kerryb@austarnet.com.au> To: "Patti" <phacht@peoplepc.com>; <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 17, 2008 10:00 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] Bounty Immigration Lookup Patti >I am confused Patti, > > I am doing look ups for Bounty immigration to Australia NSW 1828 to 1842 > which is a CD. > And also 'A Pauper Warren' a book written by Gerard Curtain of Ballyhahill > about the famine in the Shanagolden/Ballyhahill district. > Then I am writing a book called 'The Shannon to The Crooked' which among > many other families covers two Purtell families both convicts from > Limerick > to Australia and one became a very large squatter. > > I am assuming that you are interested in the book 'A Pauper Warren' there > is > a mention of a James Purtill as there are four pages on him it is too much > to type out and not fair re copyright. 3. Hi Jane They are not recorded in the Bounty records. In 1840 ships were going to Sydney, where some families went overland to Victoria, others took further steamers from Sydney to Geelong and Melbourne a four day trip and also in that year there were ships direct from Ireland to Geelong and Melbourne. In 1837 there were 60 to 70 families settled around William's Town (Williamstown) and vicinity hence the town of Melbourne came into being. By 1839 the area between Geelong and Melbourne was officially called Hobson's Bay Port Phillip. The main Port of Melbourne was called Sandridge, but many boats preferred to use Williamstown pier to avoid a ridge of sand or having to wind upstream to Melbourne. The State of Victoria in Australia was known as the Port Phillip District of New South Wales prior to separation on 1 July 1851. Settlement at Melbourne, on the northern shore of Port Phillip Bay, commenced in 1835. As John Burke and family were very early pioneers it maybe worth contacting the Port Phillip Pioneers Assoc http://home.vicnet.net.au/~pioneers/ Also some links to the early Melbourne settlers http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/lenorefrost/portphilip.html Kerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane" <janedart@sbcglobal.net> To: <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 3:47 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] Bounty Immigration Lookup Patti > Hi Kerry, > Just read your post regarding look-ups of Bounty Immigrations.
