Helen, pardon the intrusion but saw your mention that "I believe there was a protestant marriage further back, hence the name 'William'" and am curious...is the name William a dead give away that someone was Protestant or something? I know very well that my own ancestor Michael William SHANAHAN was Roman Catholic but have suspicions that he may have been from a "mixed" marrige--his mother Bridget LUBY perhaps Catholic and her spouse Thomas SHANAHAN Roman Catholic (or vice versa) so your mention of the name William caught my eye. If this is the case, are there other given names which give indications or clues as to someone's religion? What about the given names Henry, Charles, Richard or Frederick, for example??? Kathy wrote <Helen, pardon the intrusion but saw your mention that "I believe there was a protestant marriage further back, hence the name 'William'" and am curious...is the name William a dead give away that someone was Protestant or something?> Kathy and Helen, I was named after my father, William Joseph. However, he did not want a junior, so my middle name is Patrick, having been born on March 17. I was raised Catholic. However, when I was 16, I worked a summer job for an off-the-boat Irishman that constantly teased me about being named after William of Orange. Needless to say, I did not take that too well. He claimed he was part of the IRA and would shoot the Protestants in an ambush and then sit down and have a pint or two to celebrate. I only lasted the summer with him. Bill Karr in Peoria, IL., USA
I hope you realize that someone in the IRA would never discuss such a thing, right? Every culture has it's village idiot, sounds like you ran into one of them. Could some one help me identify a location in Dublin please? On an original sheet from the 1901 census a place of birth is given as Sreland or Srcland Dublin. Could any one suggest what the actual name is and where I can find information about the own. Regards, Mary
