Did you know that the SSI differs from county to county? For example for the surname SHANAHAN in Co Limerick it lists 8 standard variants, while in Co Tipperary it lists 11. I can understand why it differs from county to county (it's showing you all the known variant spellings they have for the name in that particular county) but shouldn't the list for ALL IRELAND contain ALL the known variants that appear in ALL the counties? The SSI for the surname SHANAHAN across ALL IRELAND is obscenely long (88 variants). However, the variant spelling of Shannahan (with 2 n's in the middle) though it appears in both the SSI lists for Co Limerick and for Co Tipperary does NOT appear in the variant list for ALL IRELAND. So, if you (like me) were thinking that when doing searches across ALL IRELAND that you were "automatically" getting ALL the variants of your surname's spelling....you might want to check and see what your ALL IRELAND searches might possibly have been missing! For me it is a BIGGIE since the double "N" spelling of my name is pretty darn common and I've been doing a lot of ALL IRELAND searches. Happy Hunting! Kathy Rhodes Leave no stone unturned!
