Jill Williams' posting prompts this one re MCQUAIDs in our line who emigrated from Castlemahon (Mahoonagh) Limerick to Chicago between 1854 and 1857 (based on nothing more than the ages (notoriously inaccurate in my experience!) and birthplaces of children as reported in the 1860 Chicago census). Mary SCANLAN (DOB 1823) married David MCQUAID (DOB 1820) and, per the census, had the following children born in Ireland: Jeremiah (DOB 1843), Edward (1846), Mary (DOB 1848); David (DOB 1849); Catherine (1851); Timothy (DOB 1854). Their youngest, John, was apparently born in the US (1857). There are two other “Quade” or “Quaid” families listed on the same Census page on the same street (all born in Ireland) – A John who is 65 and his wife, Catherine (age 64), and, presumably their children Edward (24) and Helen (21). In another house are Mike Quaid (age 28) and Winnie (age 28), so perhaps they were all related. By the way, the name Jeremiah is the name of Mary’s brother-in-law, husband of her sister, Catherine Scanlan SULLIVAN. Jeremiah SULLIVAN, also Limerick born according to family lore, was already living in Chicago when the SCANLAN family arrived in 1850 or thereabouts.
