Hi there Robyn, I was interested in the book on Hospital, that you mentioned to Mike. By any chance would there be Leddin's or Condon's mentioned in there by any chance? Hello again Michelle, I hope you have looked at the Leddin site I have previously mentioned, a lot of this is on the site. Leddin mentioned in regional Fairs & Factional fights. 1830 Paddy Leddin was the leader of The Three Year Olds who agreed on a truce between Maurice Fitzgerald the leader of The Four Year Olds. The possible reason for the name of these two rival groups suggests as the plausable reason an argument about the age of a bull at one of these fairs. It obviously didn't take much to hurt ones pride in those days. 1945 Agricultural show is a photo of Timmy Leddin. Griffiths Valuation BALLYCAHILL Timothy Leddin mentioned three times, had a reasonable bit of land along with Patrick Leddin. 1929 There is a N. Leddin who was one of the Hurling Champions (he was in a team) Sincerely, Robyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michelle Leddin" <irishsoul@netspace.net.au> To: <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 9:50 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] O'Brien Research > Hi there Robyn, > > I was interested in the book on Hospital, that you mentioned to Mike. Here is a bit more on the three year olds and four year olds and others. I put this together recently for the newsletter of our local Irish group. >From these colourful people we descend! Beryl Faction Fighting was part of the norm at Tipperary Fairs. This strange social phenomenon started around 1805. Factions were armies of country people, often hundreds, armed with sticks and stones. The sticks, fashioned from either holly, oak, ash or blackthorn, were carefully prepared and seasoned by greasing with butter and stored for a period in open chimney flues. Sometimes the head of the stick was hollowed out and filled with molten lead. The different Factions had colourful names such as The Caravats , Shanavests , Three Year Olds, Four Year Olds, Black Hens, Magpies, Reaskawallaghs , Oultachs, etc. These pre arranged fights were between families, clans, namesakes, baronies or parishes, and the cause of such a fight might be some insult, real or imagined. (Information from the Cappawhite web page) The cause of the dispute between the three-year-olds and four-year-olds was that there existed a bull on the borders of two parishes, which the people of one parish said was 3 years old at a certain time while the people of the other parish said he was 3 years old. So they fought and battered and killed each other at fairs and markets, and on Sundays and holidays after mass, according to the approved system of faction fights.
