Last week, I transcribed the tithe applotments for this civil parish which is located not far from the County Tipperary border. One of the names I found was Bryan O'Connor living in Baggotstown, the same name as my gr gr gr grandfather. The tithes were dated 1833. His son, Timothy, my gr gr grandfather, was born ca 1810 so this could be my ancestor, however, Timothy's death cert has him and his parents born in County Tipperary. Also, Timothy was married in Tipperary RC parish but that is also where his wife was born and raised and usually one did get married in the wife's church. To add to this, I have also found a Timothy Connors in 1851 cited for leaving an unharnessed cart while in Tipperary Town. The clerk (Petty Sessions Court) wrote his address as 'Garryspillane, Galbally Parish. While close to Galbally Civil Parish, Garryspillane was actually located in Ballyscaddan Civil Parish which is also not far from County Tipperary or Knockainy Civil Parish. Until I can see the RC records for the area, I don't know whether this is my Bryan O'Connor or not but I have been doing these tithes for years now and have never found a Bryan O'Connor/Connors before so this one really gets me wondering if this is mine. Looking at the Discovery Map for the area, it looks like Baggotstown is about 6 or so miles from Emly in County Tipperary. Timothy emigrated to Troy NY where his brother William lived. On Williams' gravestone, it says he was born in Emly RC Parish, County Tipperary. In 2008, while I was in Dublin, I looked at the Emly RC Parish fairly quickly due to time constraints. For the time period of my search for William and/or Timothy's births, there were gaps in the records, so not finding their baptisms was not conclusive. So this brings me to my questions. Is it possible, that they moved around and didn't stay put in the area where they were born and raised? Did they follow the work? Any opinions? I don't know if it is wishful thinking on my part but I have a strong feeling that this might just be the guy I have been looking for and was wondering what others, familiar with the area thought. Thanks in advance for your opinions. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Pat, I think they did follow work and sometimes the wife's family if they had something to offer. I have seen a baptism held for one child in a more distant church than the rest, which implies a family reason. Anything is possible. Sounds like you are honing in on your guy.
