Hi, I asked Sheila how she got all the info on her relative, it was so detailed. Great stuff. Thank you. Seoighe referenced National Archives No. 17979c. which works out to be an Outrage Report submitted by the local constable to his superior. This consisted of the constables account of what happened and notes on actions taken, for instance the posting of a reward and a notice that a description of the culprit was to be placed in the "Hue and Cry", a kind of police gazette. Next steps were to try to find accounts in newspapers including the Hue and Cry. I learned that he had been arrested from an article in the Limerick Chronicle but had no luck with the Hue and Cry (LDS film 951968). The records of the Limerick City Gaol (LDS film 2356854) are an interesting read, but Timothy apparently was not taken there. I continue to look, but have learned little else. I think, but am far from sure, that this bad boy was my gggggreat uncle. Mary Walsh must have survived since she was the one who brought charges as stated in the Outrage Report. It is wonderful that you could find out so much Cheers Tina -------------------------------------------------- From: "sheilathoman" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 04, 2011 7:59 PM To: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] Clohessy, Cloughesy The Timothy Clohessy in question is almost certainly my relative, so I have tried to find out as much as possible about this incident. He was charged with assault after he hit his tenant Mary Walsh with a shovel during an argument over the ownership of some manure. A large reward was offered for his arrest and he was taken into custody the next day. Mary Walsh was taken to the dispensary in Bruree. The incident took place in Tankardstown (near Kilmallock) in June of 1838. I have yet to find out whether Timothy was found guilty as charged or what kind of sentence he may have received. A look through the records of the Limerick Gaol would suggest that assault was not nearly so severely punished as petty thievery. so Timothy probably got off lightly. According to the Cancelled Land Books Clohessys and Walshes continued to live on adjacent plots of land until about 1865 when my Clohessy family immigrated and settled in Chicago. Anyone one else researching Clohessys or Toomeys from the area around Kilmallock, Fedamore and Bruree? I'd really like to share info with you.
