Hi. This is my first post to the list. My gggrandparents Matthew Dwyer and Mary Martin were married at St. Mary RC Church in Croom village in 1840. Both were claimed to be 18 at the time. They came to America in 1852 aboard the ship Underwriter, having lost two children, brought two others with them, and a fifth is unaccounted for. The children were baptized at St. Mary also. I find no evidence they lived in Croom village, but they claimed to have been from Croom Parish. Unfortunately, baptismal records at St. Mary only go back to 1828, not early enough to tell me their parents. I have made three trips to Ireland from North Carolina, USA, to see what I could learn, which isn't much. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Phil Albro (Dwyer on my mother's side)
Phil, Having some ancestry in that area, I can tell you that Croom RC parish included parts of Ballingarry, Anhid, Dysert and Croom civil parishes. Marriages are supposed to go back to 1770, with some gaps. You might try Griffiths Valuation (now freely searchable on askaboutireland.ie, ancestry.com, Irish Times and other sites). If you can identify your family in Griffiths (about 1851), then you could try to search the Tithes Applotment (1826) for the same location. You might not find a firm parentage but at least the exact location they came from - which is about all that many of us can hope for!
