Annette, Thanks for posting this. I know their answer wasn't really very helpful to you specifically; but I am glad to see it nonetheless as I've been just a tad worried that the tutorial I shared at http://tinyurl.com/IFHF-Tutorial might be considered by some to be inappropriate as it explains how to work around being charged to do searches. (Particularly after Mr. Grenham mentioned "a way to outwit the restrictions" in his article published at: http://tinyurl.com/Grenham-article ) I want to make it perfectly clear that it was not my intention to "outwit" the site, but rather to show folks how to use the available features of the site to limit your hits and thus to make an informed intelligent decision as to which records to purchase. Based on the IFHF's statement: "You can refine your search as much as you like and as many times as you like before you need to pay to view any results.", I feel that my tutorial is NOT at all out of line and I hope it helps some of you narrow down those huge chunks of data when researching common surnames. Hi Joan I had a bit of a nose around for you as I too have Irish ancestors who went to India. Interestingly, but irrelevant, I found another Thomas Sims in the 1st Madras Fusiliers who died on the same day and in the same cholera epidemic as my great, great grandfather - this in 1857 so not your guy. I've found making the link back to Ireland from India very difficult - still haven't achieved it with my O'Kelly ancestor as no father's name on his marriage details. After years of trying might have partially nailed McCarthy and that was through ploughing through Muster Books at the National Archives. Trouble is, his first name is John and though he enlisted at Limerick he could have come from anywhere. I hope a Sims relative sticks their head over the parapet, but I fear you are in it for the long haul! Kathy, You were just sharing your knowledge on searching. Not knowing how to search an individual site, keeps researchers from finding what may be there. I have search engines on my websites. Occasionally I have looked at the log of searches and been surprised that someone might only search once with say one last name. Or try a search that is like a query. You sometimes have to work at it. Anyway, I found you guide very useful. I didn't know you could try one letter and build on it. I was trying whole names. Sometimes I have found a nickname (like Kitty) which you might never find. They really could stop the site from being searched if that was their intention. Just my opinion. :) Christina Little.House.Antiques wrote: > Thanks for posting this. This is the email I received when I complained about the fee structure, as I'm searching for a common name. There answer doesn't take into account that I may not know exactly where they lived... Dear Mrs. White, Thanks for your feedback on the new credit system. The new system allows you to narrow your searches by completing more search criteria as outlined below. All users can view ten pages of search results free under the new system. After that users will need to pay to view search results. You can refine your search so that you get less matches before paying to view search results (1 page of results up to a max of 10 index records will cost 10 cent (EURO) to view.) You can refine your search as much as you like and as many times as you like before you need to pay to view any results. For example a search on our site for Patrick Murphy baptisms between 1845-1855 locates 636 matches. Without further information there is no way to narrow this search. There is no charge for this search. If you enter a father's name as John, you will be told there are 102 matches - still too many. If you enter a mother's first name of Mary you will get 22 matches. If you select a particular county of origin, say Co. Galway, you get one match. You can do all this without any charge. Based on the example Patrick Murphy we have refined the search using the most common first names and looked in a mid nineteenth century timeframe when most parishes were keeping records. Since all the tithes for this barony have been transcribed, I have formed an index for the whole barony for easier searching. Just find you name, get the civil parish and then go to the civil parish and get the townland(s). Steve, The Brideswell prison is actually in Kerry but very close to the Limerick Border and I must say I was confused at first. The O'Shaughnessy Rally was held in Tarbert on 2 occasions and on the first we visited the Brideswell Prison Museum. Apparently a lot of their prisoners were sent to Australia. They were flying the Australian flag which was a bit tatty so when I came home I sent them a new one, courtesy of our local member of parliament. There is a little teashop and information centre there and the ladies were delightful. If I were you I would make contact perhaps after googling Brideswell Museum and they will be only too happy to help you if they can. Hope that is some help. Hi Margaret, I checked the catalogue at the National Archives and could not find a Thomas Heath in the 47th Regiment. This does not necessarily mean that it is incorrect. I wondered if there are any records of inmates for Tarbert Bridgewell. I was recently looking at birth records at FamilySearch.org and notice that Tarbert was listed for several people from two different lines. Some listings show Tarbert in Limerick and some show Kerry. What even confused me more was that some individuals list both (two separate) Tarbert, Kerry and Limerick. Anyway, after looking up information on Tarbert my thoughts were that in these cases maybe the father was incarcerated at the prison while the mother resided in Limerick. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Steve
