    3. Sorry Jennifer, can't help you with Embarkation records to South Africa. Have you tried emailing any regimental museum for the 27th Regiment of foot just in case they can help with those records. I found this on the 27th Regt of Foot, not sure whether it is applicable to your fellow. http://www.armymuseums.org.uk/amot-search/default.asp?Category=Amot&Service= Museum-Displayhttp://www.armymuseums.org.uk/amot-search/default.asp?Category =Amot&Service=Museum-Display Cheers Joan Thank you Joan. That site is mainly for research into SA's Dutch ancestry. I understand that the 27th went to South Africa in 1835 on 'The George' but have yet to find those embarkation records. Any ideas appreciated. Jennifer Sorry it was of no help Jennifer. Would this site be of any help with SA info? http://www.e-family.co.za/ Joan Thank you Joan. I actually have no interest in the India connection, as my ancestors went from Ireland with the 27th Foot Regt to South Africa, but I was hoping that there might be some of the extensive information you mentioned on those Embarkation Records too. Kind Regards, Jennifer

    2. Because of your prompting, I took a look and noticed right away that they have a bargain price on their homepage. It says until April 1, but it is still there so worth checking to see if the 20% discount is still good. I signed up a couple of weeks ago and found a ton of great stuff, including an article on my parents' wedding and a picture I had never seen before. The Irish News link (on my computer at least) is lower on the page so it is easy to miss unless you scroll down. Could you give us some tips on what has worked for you in narrowing down your search of the Irish American Weekly as the search engine only offers first and last name boxes and let me tell you, it is hard to work with names like Michael Higgins and Patrick Moloney. 3. Chris, Sandmen used to dredge the floor of the Shannon and Abbey rivers for the sand that was used in most of the building works in Limerick city until the beginning of the last century. They had their on style of boat called a Sandcot, with a flat base that helped transporting the sand. They mostly lived in the Abbey area of the city which was in St. Mary's Parish, They lived along side another group The Abbey Fishermen, and although the two families intermarried they didn't always get along as the sand dredging would disturb the fishing areas. 3. Chris, See http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/ObituariesdeathnoticesinquestreportsfuneralreportsetcfromTheLimerickChronicle/Alphabeticallistingsofobituariesdeathnoticesetc/f.pdf There are at least 8 FRAWLEY obits published in the Limerick Chronicle from 1858 to 1908. Using the years given for the Frawleys (and the death dates in the accompanying obits) you should be able to check the burial registers for Mt. St. Lawrence to see if any of these 8 are buried there. Also I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that George Kelly of this list has FRAWLEYs in his family and that a few of them are buried in Mt. St. Lawrence Cemetery. The FRAWLEY family of Limerick (like the SHANAHANs) by occupation were SANDMEN. Happy Hunting! 3. Hi Jennifer In a guide I have by Peter Bailey, Chairman of the Families in British India Society, he shows the India Office References for the years covered for the Embarkation Lists together with the LDS Film No. i.e. my John Lynch was found on LDS Film 1835691 which covered Jan 1825 to Aug 1854 [L/MIL/9 series]....this is for the Hon. East India Co not the British Regiments. Originally I found it on the FHL Catalogue. There are also Depot Description Lists in the L/MIL/9 series which contain a lot of information also. From memory though you had to know whether in Artillery or other unit or name of ship. I'm not sure of this as I found these about 15 years ago. I'll see if I can find how to find the LDS FHL catalogue and how I found the film which as I said above was many years ago. Hope this helps. Joan Where did you find the Embarkation Records on the LDS site? Jennifer

    3. Judie, I have a subscription to genealogybank.com which is all USA newspapers; fortunately though the database includes quite a few newspapers whose main focus was on Ireland, such as: Irish American Weekly 8/12/1849 – 7/4/1914 Irish Citizen 10/19/1867 – 10/10/1868 Irish Nation 11/26/1881 – 10/6/1883 Irish Voice 2/15/2006 – Current Irish World 1/11/1890 – 4/8/1905 They (the Irish American Weekly in particular), are chock full of Irish obits, marriages, and current political events of the day as they happened in ALL parts of Ireland and I've found it to be a wonderful source of information. In fact, would venture to say that I've found more funeral notices and obits that took place in Ireland in these US papers than I've ever found in the Irish newspapers themselves. Anyone who wishes me to look for a funeral / obituary or marriage notice for their Irish ancestors please feel free to email me directly and give me the particulars and I'll see what I can dig up for you. Although I've been researching Mason family in Co. Clare just a stones through from Limerick City, I'm not at all familiar with what documents might be available to assist in my search. I'm looking for family who died between 1880 and 1920 and wonder if newspaper obituaries for this time period would be available online or how one would go about a research request. Hope you can provide some infomation/guidance. Thanks again, Judie Mason Chicago

    3. This is the link to the obituaries http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/ObituariesdeathnoticesinquestreportsfuneralreportsetcfromTheLimerickChronicle/there are quite a few Masons on the list, at the end they have alphabetical listings of those in the directory, then you go to the year page and find the name as there is a scan to the original newspaper report there, sometimes they have a wealth of information, such as parents names, and even on occasion cause of death.
