    1. [IRL-LIMERICK] Shanahan
    2. Kathy Rhodes, Little House Antiques, posted a mention of a Shanahan family. I have an interest in this family because John Shanahan and his wife Margaret emigrated to America more or less at the same time as my Rowles family who were from Cloonteen, Doon, Limerick, settled in the same place (Washington Co, NY) and later migrated to the same place, Waupun, Dodge/Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin where they are all buried in Calvary Cemetery (1913 ae 86 and 1903 ae 80). Their daughter, also named Margaret, was born in 1854 in Union Village, Washington Co, NY and married George Benjamin Rowles (later Rowells, s/o Luke and Margaret) who was born in 1850 in Easton, Washington Co, NY. They married in 1881 in Waupun, WI. Because John and Margaret Shanahan were always close to the other Cappamore/Doon people as they crossed the US, it is quite possible that they were also from Doon. Although this is not a good match for the emigrant John Shannahan (too young), this baptismal record may be useful one day: >From Doon Church records, as transcribed by Pat Connors and posted on _http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/LIM/baptisms.htm_ (http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/LIM/baptisms.htm) : Shanahan John; father John ,mother Connors Margaret, 1/3/1836 Doon sponsors:Tim Connors, Ellen Shanahan. I hope these folks may fit into one of your families and that someone has info to share with me. Ann Lamb

(So even though this database has marriages as early as 1619 there are NO marriages recorded in the city of Limerick between the years of 1619-1696.) So where does the database tail off? Are there records for the city of Limerick until the database stops in 1898? NO! By trial and error I figured out that the marriages for the city of Limerick STOP in 1882. So to recap here even though this database runs from 1619 to 1898 the records for the CITY of Limerick run specifically from 1697 thru 1882. One important thing about this database: Although it tells you the marriage place, for example it might say: Saint John, Limerick, Limerick, Ireland - it does NOT tell you WHICH of the two Saint John parishes it is referring to (and there are two parishes for almost EVERY parish name in the city of Limerick--one being Saint John Church of Ireland and the other being Saint John Roman Catholic). In order to determine WHICH parish, you need to go to the IFHF site at http:www.rootsireland.ie and (do the FREE search as outlined in my tutorial at http://tinyurl.com/IFHF-Tutorial) and plug in the values you found at familysearch.org (name, date, spouses name etc) and drill down to the parish level and determine WHICH of the two parishes that record actually comes from! For example: George Elish married Eleanor Burk on 18 Jul 1697 in Saint John, Limerick, Limerick, Ireland. If I go to http:www.rootsireland.ie I find that this marriage occurred in the parish of ST. JOHN'S (CI) [CI being the IFHF's designation for Church of Ireland]. Happy Hunting! Though it should be noted that many people outside Ireland are mentioned. Some may be absentee landlords or simply parties who have moved to other parts of the world. Deed registration started in 1708 but many deeds mention earlier deeds. The database has a number of references to deeds dated in the early 1600. The Registry of Deeds is a functioning registry. 3. I was contacted through a post I made on a rootsweb sight. Knockainey Reaching Out has one of the most organized parishes in the program. I am registered with the sight now and have corresponded with them looking for information on my Kirby family. They did a FREE search of the parish records and provided me with the same family baptismal information that I paid IFHF for. They are willing to help in any way possible. Even provided suggestions on hotels and traveling in the area. I also suggested they post up maps of the area and townlands and today they had posted some maps of the Knockainey parish area. I hope more parishes jump on board Ireland Reaching Out. Not many are participating with the on-line sight. Valerie: My mistake, before you supplied the name of the paper and the year, I did a search for the terms "james russell" AND "crowe" on http://www.limerickcity.ie site and it returned the following: : Russell File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat Married last Saturday, Mr James Russell to Miss Crowe, daughter of the late Mr William Crowe, merchant, handsome fortune. Clonmell Gazette, Thrs 3 July 1788 ... www.limerickcity.ie/media/Russell-7.pdf So I assumed that the marriage announcement came from the Clonmell Gazette for 3 Jul 1788 and that the marriage records on rootsireland.ie and familysearch.org didn't match since they were from 1787. ( I should have clicked on the link to the PDF document itself rather than rely on text that was returned by the limerickcity.ie search !) But you might want to check out that document out anyhow at www.limerickcity.ie/media/Russell-7.pdf (it appears to be an extraction of every person they could find with the surname Russesll that had anything at all to do with Limerick city. ) Happy Hunting! 3. Pat~       I have not received the type of request, as you.  However, from various sources in the Republic I have received notices of events, which sound similar to reunion type.  Unfortunately, the ones I saw were happening in a matter of weeks.  Thus, unless one had planned to be in country at those times it would difficult from accommodation and cost issues to attend at almost "last minute".       I think it is terrific.  When we have been "home", to Mayo and Wexford over the years, we found many native Irish curious about all those ancestors who went out and their families today in USA, OZ, Canada and even South America.  In most circumstances, contact was lost.  We are now seeing the large number of descendants searching.  My husband and I are fortunate that our maternal sides did keep the link open over the 150 years to their families.  Perhaps it was a "woman thing", but whatever, we are so happy it happened.        Hope the counties will set up some type of newsletter which will publicize these events in a timely manner. That marriage article from Clonmell Gazette, Thrs 3 July 1788 (via limerickcity.ie) Found same marriage as you on rootsireland.ie and as you say 1787 is the year and the C of I parish of St Mary's in Limerick City is the place. Would marriage notice not have been printed until 8 months later????
