    3. Can I suggest not to get too stressed out about the spelling of your Kearney/Carney name. My maiden name was Shaughnessy and my grandfather was the only member of his family to keep that spelling - his brothers chose Shanasy! We have found over 200 spelling variations to our name, some would be obviously spelling mistakes or transciption errors but remember not everyone was literate. Try to keep an open mind - it sure helps on occasions. Megan - in Australia -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. SPAMfighter has removed 173 of my spam emails to date. 3. I'm not getting stressed out at all. The problem I have is which spelling to search for. I'm actually even getting the feeling that both are wrong as I can't seem to find anything on either of them. I got all excited when I found the names of James Carney/Kearney's parents but when I checked on Ancestry they don't appear at all. I'm getting rather frustrated. -----Original Message----- From: irl-limerick-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-limerick-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Megan McKenzie Sent: 17 October 2012 10:17 AM To: IRL-LIMERICK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-LIMERICK] Kearney/Carney Can I suggest not to get too stressed out about the spelling of your Kearney/Carney name. 1. Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] KEARNEY/CARNEY
    2. The spelling varies. The name Kearney is evenly distributed throughout the four provinces of Ireland; the alternative spelling Carney, however, is almost confined to Connacht, particularly Co. Mayo. The latter are O Cearnaigh in Irish (presumably from cearnach, victorious) and are a branch of the Ui Fiachrach whose territory was named Moynulla and Balla in Co. Mayo. The Dalcassian O'Kearneys, who migrated to Cashel in early times, are also O Cearnaigh. The most important Kearney sept in history are of different origin. In Irish their name is O Catharnaigh. 3. Hi there I am looking for the Kearney/Carney family that came to South Africa with the Aided Immigration to the Cape. On that list the name is spelt KEARNEY but on one of the Death Notices I have for James it is spelt Carney. I have the following - they arrived on the Coldstream II in September 1861 Bridget age 18 (my great great grandmother) Edmond age 22 John age 26 from LIMERICK with his wife Mary age 25 (maiden name unknown) I have the following - they arrived on the Tudor in February 1860 James age 26 - On his Death Notice it states that he was from Broadford, Co. Clare - parents Michael Carney & Mary Naughton Patrick age 24 with his wife Catherine Shaughnessy age 20 Then there is a John age 27 from NICOLAS STREET, LIMERICK arrived on the Relief in July 1864 I have looked everywhere and can't find anything about them in Ireland. I am convinced they are all related, either siblings or cousins and all these names appear as witnesses to Bridget's children' baptisms. They are all Roman Catholic. I was wondering if there is someone who as access to baptism records who can shed some light as to where exactly they came from and if they are siblings. All information will be greatly appreciated. Patty - South Africa

    3. Hi Paul! Coll and Cull are variants of the same name. I am considering a Coll family from Ballyphillip, Croom to be possibly related to the Cull family I am researching. They are in proximity to Lisduane, Ballingarry to be a possibility. I don't know as of yet if the De Valera piece will be related because I am just staring to touch on this family name. But there seems to be quite a lot of interest on the internet with that particular family. I am however very interested in what you have to say about a Hugh Gorman being dispossessed of his land in Feenagh! Can you tell me more about that because I do suspect that there is a heavy association with my Gorman family to Feenagh even though they show up back to the Tithe applotments in Lisduane, Ballingarry? Thank you very much for your information tonight Paul! Sincerely, Sandy Lovell -----Original Message----- From: Paul Keroack <pkeroack@sbcglobal.net> To: irl-limerick <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Oct 3, 2012 10:30 pm Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] Need help in Lisduane, Ballingarry and Feenagh, Kilmeedy Sandy, I suppose you know that a Coll family of the nearby (10 miles east) parish of Bruree were the maternal ancestors of the late Irish president Eamon De Valera, by whom he was raised. Its not a common surname so perhaps there might be a connection? Not sure if Cull is a variant spelling of Coll or a different surname. I own a wonderful book "From Bruree to Corcomohide" by Mainchin Seoighe which has a lot of local information about De Valera and family but it does focus on Bruree. However, Feenagh is included in his map of "ancient Corcomohide." A Hugh Gorman of an area which is in modern Feenagh was a landowner dispossesed of his land in 1654.
