    3. In addition to the FREE "Irish History Day" in the Eastman's newsletter, is this article about 50GB of FREE cloud storage. Every family history researcher needs some secure FREE cloud storage and I find this one to be very interesting in their offering of 50GB free. It uses the 2048-bitkey so it is UBER secure for storing data. Check it out - http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2013/01/megaconz-offers-50-gigabytes-of-storage-in-the-cloud-for-free.html This is not a referral service (at least I don't find anything on their site to indicate such. If 50GB is not enough, they offer PAID plans up to 4 terabytes (800 times as large). BTW, Dropbox only offers 2GB (without referral credits), Google Drive offers 5GB and SkyDrive by Microsoft offers only 7GB.

    3. I realize that my info may be of little help...but here it is : When i was growing up in Decatur, Illinois USA (Macon county) My mother mentioned a "Mrs. Canty" many times. That would have been in the 1920-1930 time frame. So there was a family with that surname that had made its way to that area etc. Good luck    Jim Clarkson Jim Clarkson jacl@sbcglobal.net --- On Sun, 1/20/13, Cheryl Moore <chezem@bigpond.net.au> wrote: From: Cheryl Moore <chezem@bigpond.net.au> Subject: [IRL-LIMERICK] Children of Charles Hynes and Mary Ann Canty To: IRL-LIMERICK@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, January 20, 2013, 8:10 AM Hi everyone, I am looking for children of Charles Hynes born 1784 Shanagolden and Mary Ann Canty. 3. Hello Monica, Just thought I would drop in on this conversation to say that a lot of people from Derry went to Scotland as I have researched a family from Derry who went to Scotland. Might be worth looking at the Scottish census. 3. Thanks Mary Ellen! I too have since found that the length of voyage varied greatly, could be as short as 14 days (even for NON steam ships such as Grinnell's ship "Patrick Henry") but as long as a month depending. I know for sure that the ship "Rock Light" did NOT stop anywhere along the way...she went directly from Liverpool to New York City. So it seems that a voyage of around 28 days was fairly 'reasonable' or average -- learn something new every day :-) Regards, Kathy A few of the Surnames of Irish born immgrants on the Sep 1856 voyage of the ship "Rock Light" from Liverpool to New York City: JONES, JAMESON, POWELL, WELLS, MOORE, ROSE, GILL, EDGAR, KELLEY, NICHOLS, VINCHY, FENETHESTON, KIRBY, SHANAHAN, BLACKBURNE. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Ellen Chambers" <maryln61@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] Ship "Rock Light" to New York City / Passengers from Limerick / Michael SHANAHAN / John KIRBY family Transatlantic steamships began in 1840. Cunard of Halifax was the owner of the first 4 or 5 vessels. Some were side wheelers. Per the article I GOOGLED the travel time was about 3 weeks. However, one would assume weather would be an issue and perhaps NYC was the final destination with a stop in Canada or Newfoundland or Nova Scotia.

    3. Andy, My bad, a slip of the tongue!! The ship Rock Light was indeed a 2,000 ton sailing ship built in Bath, Maine, NOT a STEAMship. The term packet-ship simply meant that they departed on a regular schedule and they often carried the mail. (Grinnell's Swallowtail line started out in early days leaving on a monthly basis from England to the USA but at this particular period, their ships were leaving on a weekly basis from Liverpool). The sail-packets were were eventually replaced by steamships, and the phrase "steam packet" became common in the mid-1800s (guess this is why I slipped up - too much reading fine newsprint late at night-lol!) Still, it seems to me a little much that a crossing took an entire month, particularly as I know that some of Grinnell's ships (for ex. the "Patrick Henry" made the east bound passage from Liverpool to New York often in 14 days or less). Just trying to get a feel for what it was like for my ancestor on his particular trip; find it odd that the passengers wrote that rather "glowing" card of thanks about a voyage where 3 people died - not sure I'd have thought a voyage where you lost three people was all that terrific! Kathy A few of the Surnames of Irish born immgrants on the Sep 1856 voyage of the ship "Rock Light" from Liverpool to New York City: JONES, JAMESON, POWELL, WELLS, MOORE, ROSE, GILL, EDGAR, KELLEY, NICHOLS, VINCHY, FENETHESTON, KIRBY, SHANAHAN, BLACKBURNE. ====================== Kathy: What makes you think the "Rock Light" was a steamship? In 1856??? A seaman even fell from the maintopgallant yard. Isn't that a yard-arm for a sail? Andy,

    3. Hi Jennifer I don't think William Hughes was in the military. If he was no one has ever mentioned it, but maybe I should have a look anyway. Thanks for that idea. His son John, born in Port Elizabeth, was a blacksmith. I have a record of William on the PE Census of 1875 which states him as being a labourer. The Carney/Kearney all came over with the Aided Immigration to the Cape. This elusive Anne Maria LaTouche - well she is something else. I don't think we will ever find her. Was very hot and humid this morning but the wind has picked up and it looks like we are going to have some rain. Thank heavens!!! Yesterday was about 35 degrees - just as well we have aircon.
