    1. [IRL-LIMERICK] Ireland trip and research centers
    2. melody marshall
    3. To Listers, Thanks to Susan and Patrick for their answers to my Ireland trip questions. I am making plans for my first visit to Ireland on June 9 - June 23. I have been "listening" to the Limerick list here and gathering tips for research. I plan on penning some letters to the Parish Church of Robertstown, County Limerick and see what information they are willing to share. I got the address off the Catholic Diocese of Limerick County website. It lists a Rev. Mockler as the present priest. Does anyone know if Limerick City would have any research centers that contain records that would pertain to certain parishes? What about Dublin? Besides the National Library of Ireland, what about the General Register Office, the National Archives of Ireland and the Genealogical Office? How are these facilities different from one another? Maureen, thanks for posting information about visiting the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. That is the type of advice and research tips I am looking for. I would like to know what to expect and what type of research places are to visit before arriving there this summer. I appreciate any and all who care to share their knowledge of these places. Thank you very much. Melody South Dakota, USA

    3. Hi Pat Yes there are "park and Ride" facilities on most major access roads to Dublin. If you are travelling from the South, Cork,or Limerick You will be on the M 7 (N 7). There is a park and ride facility at the M 7/ M 50 roundabout. Here you can park your car and take the "Luas" (tram) to the city centre. I'm happy to get one and to get two is overwhelming. I'll heed your advice. We have a roundabout in Kingston New York and as I live nearby I use it often. If you miss your turn you just go around again. I'm dizzy enough so I'll be careful. Can I park the car outside of Dublin and take an bus into the city? Take care and thanks again. 3. The National Library has a facility for producing the passport sized photographs — on the spot — and cheaper than some of the photographic stores offering the same service. If memory serves me right the cost is about 4 or 5 Euro. The relevant page on the National Library web site is: http://www.nli.ie/en/readers-tickets.aspx On 19/02/2008, Dunleavy, Michael: #CB - BC <Dunleavy.Michael@cb-bc.gc.ca> wrote: > > Maureen, > > I went on to the National Library website and it states that to obtain a > readers ticket you have to complete an application which "must be supported > by current identification and 2 passport-size photographs". I scheduled our trip as if these places were in the US connected by major highways. First of all, the large breakfast you'll get at the B&B will give you a slow start. Then the narrow roads and frequent towns will cause you to drive slower than you anticipated and you may arrive mid-afternoon. You find that you better get lunch before the places close (not like McDonalds, open all day). All of a sudden you find that it's late in the afternoon and you haven't even started to look around. I'm not complaining, it was my own fault for not planning a more leisurely trip. I was trying to see too much in the one trip to Ireland. So slow down and enjoy your heritage. > > By the way, if you trace your Enrights back to a Michael Enright who married Mary Shanahan before 1815, please let me know. Hi Kaye You requested I look for your family in the Glin area, sorry but this is quite difficult as I have two filing cabinets on Glin history, families, tithes, Griffiths Valuations. schools records, wedding banns, marriages, baptisms, evictions, leases, cemetery inscriptions, newspaper articles, old photos etc..many many Ballygiltenan Journals, books and other items a collection that took over twenty years. I cannot afford to take time out to research a family from A-Z. What I offered was looks ups on the Bounty Immigrants. The other material I hope to put on CD in the near future in conjunction with other persons to make available to everyone. What I can add is some information from the Schools file. 3. Maureen, I went on to the National Library website and it states that to obtain a readers ticket you have to complete an application which "must be supported by current identification and 2 passport-size photographs". Did you bring photographs with you, or did you obtain them in the "Library's shop". Do you have any idea what it would cost to have them taken in the shop and how long it would take? Do they have to be regulation passport photographs or just something around the same size? You just need to pick up a "readers ticket" at a desk downstairs. They have some volunteers on hand in a special room to right as you ascend the stairs to the reading room to help with where to start etc but it has facilitated my research to know exactly what I wanted before I went rather than wait for a volunteer to help me. I brought a list of the microfilms I wanted and had the numbers ready to fill out the request cards at the desk. The library has a website that explains all this (google National Library of Ireland) It also has an index on line of microfilmed church records and the years their records cover. (you will need to know the diocese) Doing your homework before you leave will help a lot! I never had problems getting films or a reader to do the research - but discovered that rainy days get more crowded than nice ones. The real problem might be that records are hard to read so it takes longer to go through some registers. They have magnifying glasses at the desk that you can borrow but even that sometimes doesn't help! You are limited to requesting only a few films at a time but the staff are usually swift at retreiving them and delivering them to your film reader. Last time I was there they had a little cafe opened on the first floor and gave those with a reader's ticket a 10% discount not sure if that is still true but it saved time finding a place to eat and getting back to do research. There is a hotel across the street with a pub that serves lunch. Good luck! ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-LIMERICK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Dear Kerry, Thank you so much for these details. Interesting the Canty/Hynes passengers on the Portland! I think I would also be interested in the Cork Canty names, especially if you know of any further details of a convict JOHN CANTY age 20 : trial in Limerick 12 March 1838 imprisoned Kilmainham Gaol 23 Mar 1838 and sailed on Westmoreland 18 April 1838. This would have his birth as c1819 which would be in line with my records. I have not been able to connect these events with my ancestor but this convict was granted a cert of freedom 28 April 1845. The other option would be a bounty immigrant John Canty age 28 arr on Martin Luther 1842 from Limerick . This would mean he was born c 1814 but ship age records are sometimes incorrect. On his death cert my John Canty he has been in NSW 30 years he is 52 and it is 1871. Thanks for your interest. ...Helen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry" <kerryb@austarnet.com.au> To: <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 18, 2008 3:41 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] HYNES/CANTY > Hi Helen > > Guess what I found Timothy yesterday and he may have arrived with his > brother Thomas, just have to find him again. 3. Hi Susan, Thank you for the two e-mail responses.
