    3. Bonnie~ The dates in Church parish registers is for Baptism. They are usually referred to as sacramental records. Now, "back in the day" that MAY have also been the birth day but not necessarily. In 1864 ALL births no matter what the religion were required to be registered in Civil Records with a penalty attached for not doing so. This was also true for marriage and death but there was NO penalty attached for not doing so. Really early church records may not be all that complete or accurate because there was a time when the priests were in hiding, usually 17th & 18th century Ireland. Also, the good Father may have spent days traveling around his parish before he returned home and recorded data which in some cases was from his memory! Civil birth records as we know them now, did not come into being in Ireland until 1864. Since there was a distrust for the government, many were not done until a later time. To avoid the penalty, the date was changed to be in compliance with the law. Mary Ellen Chambers Bonita Evjen <bevjen@bevcomm.net> wrote: I need to clarify. 3. Cris~ Not sure about the USA, but from reading about Europe, it appears that young girls were placed in the "big" houses at very young ages. Sometimes because of the abject poverty of the times, families were in poor houses. The children were taken/sold to people for servants and one can only imagine!! "At home" from the census for my family meant the child was too young for school and of course, "at school" is self explanatory. Also, saw the term "at home" placed by an aunt who was not married and may have helped the wife with her duties. Mary Ellen crazyangel25@webtv.net wrote: Hi Mary Ellen, I was very interested n seeing a repl to yo post about young servant girls. 3. I am trying to fill out my g grandparents genealogy story by getting some idea of the area where they lived, worked and worshiped. My g grandmother was a servant in a house on Arthur's Quay or in that area; Francis Street. She was Catholic and worshiped at St. Michael's church. My g grandfather was a seaman who worshiped at St. Mary's church and lived on Mary Street. He was English and Protestant. The time line was approx. 1860 1863. The year of their Civil Marriage was 1862 in Limerick City. She was living in County Clare, Ennis Town, Mill Street when she delivered their first child in 1864. They emigrated to USA in 1868. We have visited the area twice when going 'home' to Mayo & Wexford but it is now so built up, it is hard to imagine it 150 yrs. ago. Was it a upper class area even if it was on the Quay? Was it a "rough" place with pubs and houses of ill repute? If a 16 yr. old girl listed her occupation as servant, where would she have worked?? Mary Ellen Chambers

    3. Hi Valerie, I am not really sure. However from a cousin I got a short family tree that had been told by Lady Marias son Frederick to this cousins father. He said that his mother was called Lady Maria Louisa Fitzgerald. and also that his father was a Welsh Military man. I have his military file what there is of it. Now her father was an Attorney on I believe Frances St. in Limerick City and he did whatever needed to be done in all courts. The only thing else is that in the Freemans records there are only two John Fitzgeralds listed for the right time frame and they are both of Knights of Glin. I still need to do some searching for stuff in Limerick. Currently the Archivest at St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick is doing a research on theses Fitzgeralds. John Sr., Ann, Maria Louisa, John Coote, Henry. They are looking for John and Anns marriage which I believe was in 1802 at St. Johns Church also Maria was born 1803. They are also looking for my Hughes. Ensign Paul Hughes of the 79th Cameron Highlanders and 93rd Highlanders, William, Robert, John, twins Wellington, Anna Maria, Charles, Henry. The christening of Robert, John, Wellington, Anna Maria can be found in the St. Mary's Cathedral film which I got from the LDS Library in Salt Lake. I have it on permanent loan.
