To the best of my knowledge the baptism, in Ireland, was usually on the third day after birth. In my own family that was the case. I was born on the 6th and baptised on the 9th. The anomolies of children appearing to be born after their baptism was simply down to the fact that there was some form of penalty if the birth was not registered within three months of the event, so, if the child had not been registered at the time then the parents might tell a little lie. There was a lot of illiteracy and maybe the parents were not really aware of the requirements, or, maybe they were just too busy trying to survive or there may have been medical issues. Children were born in the home, not in a hospital for the main part, and it is unlikely that there were official or medical people involved. Or, maybe it was just an oversight on everybody's part. According to Father Liam Enright, Parish Priest in Cratloe, whom I met with this past Tuesday, the christening typically took place as soon as possible, sometimes within hours of the birth. Certainly no more than a day or two, unless there were some unusual circumstances. There are many cases where the births were not registered and the babies were not baptized until well after birth. I think the illiteracy and extreme poverty played a big part in it. These people had more on their minds. In some cases babies were ill and baptized at home as well. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JJ Woods" <woodsjj@gmail.com> To: <irl-limerick@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2008 2:35 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-LIMERICK] parish registers > To the best of my knowledge the baptism, in Ireland, was usually on the > third day after birth.
