    1. Re: McKone tombstone inscription Leitrim County Ireland

I have a feeling that the "Drummond Can" is actually a representation of a single placename word - with an inadvertent space or a completely worn-away letter in that location. Just a hunch, mind you <gr>. There are about 195 townlands/towns starting with Drum in Co. Leitrim (I have the listings on Excel files - it may be different on the www.seanruad.com website). You might want to check through those placenames, such as those starting with Druman, Drumin, Drumman. Just go to the seanruad site, enter Drum under townland, Leitrim under "county" and "beginning with" under the search method. By the way, I checked for alternative "Drom" townlands, but there are only 5 listings there - all Dromores. I'll have to admit that looking through all of those Drum- names, I still can't see a suitable name......whether ignoring the space, or putting any letter in place of it. The "Can/Cane" may be the problem, but as you probably don't have a photograph of the tombstone, you're sort-of stuck with the transcription. I'm not sure I can be of any more help (if you can call any of my above, "help"), but let me know if you have any more questions. Quickly, though, as I'm leaving for Ireland the beginning of next week and won't be back until the end of the month. Or just wait until then - those McKones in Nebraska aren't in any rush <gr>.
