First of all you haven't mentioned dates so I don't know the time period you're working with. I was lucky enough to find a NYC birth record in 1866 for a child of my great great grandparents, Patrick S. Wren and Ann Murray which listed the birthplace for mother and father as Leitrim, Ireland. I have yet to be able to place them on the land in Leitrim, though all the family names including Baptismal sponsors of their children in NYC are well known in Leitrim:Wren, Murray, Hackett(Guckian), Shanley, Callaghan, Gray(Colreavy), McKeon, and Conboy. The challenge with Wren is the many spellings possible both in Leitrim and in the states:Wren, Wrenn, Wrynn, Wrin, Wrinn, Renn, Rinn, Rynn, and McCrann, McRann. As you can see it's quite challenging despite the fact it's a relatively uncommon name elsewhere (Many Wrens in North Kerry and Rynnes in Clare). I took a quick look at the Leitrim-Roscommon Home page, which has both Griffith's Valuations(c1850) and 1901 Census for Leitrim and in Griffith's there is an Ambrose McRann listed. Perhaps he's your's.
