Can anyone tell me if there were people from Wales who came into Leitrim in the late 1700's or at any time? When I asked my father why our name was Whitten if we were Irish (and not O'Whitten!) he said his Grandmother always said the name was of Welsh derivation. I have traced Whittens back in Kinlough to early 1800's and they may possibly have been at the other end of Lake Melvin before then. Would there have been any reason for an influx from Wales at that time? I'm interested in any information on the Postmasters William and Charles Whitten and their families or Hamilton Blair family .
