The '80' is the age of the deceased. I can only plead insanity (or perhaps red wine!) Go to http://www.groireland.ie/ All the info is there. I've never tried getting a vert by post but they don't take credit card details unless you send the details by post which I do not recommend. I do know they will take cash. What you want is "search and photicopy of entry in register" This costs 4 euro. I don't know how that translates into dollars but should be easy to work out (probably around 3 - 5 dollars). You may have to download the relevant form but they are all on this site. Best of luck. Let me know how you get on JIm

Back then people lost track of their age as they got older as they simply had no reason to keep track. My ggrandfather is on the 1901 census as being 36, he was actually 41 according to his baptismal record, this is typical. If you have a look on the 1901 census site that I sent the link for there are some Greene/green's on there and it should give you an indication of what part of leitrim he might have come from. Greene/Green isn't that common in Leitrim today.

    3. For anyone interested in the name Baxter in south Leitrim. There is a statue just outside of Fenagh with the name of a Captain M.E. Baxter. It is a memorial to six officers of the IRA who were ambushed and killed by British forces in March 1921. Michael Noonan

It was owned by Johnnie Magarahan but he left running to his brother Michael this must be the Magarahans you found in on the G.Valuation, from the evidence found by all the kind people on this board they are not my Magarahans i would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me look for my family Shelagh

The picture of the tombstone provided the location of where he was born, up until I got that picture from a volunteer I only knew that he was born in Ireland. I received a picture of his obit from the same volunteer and it stated that he was 80 years old. So that does conflict with what's on his headstone. I have been unable to find his immigration date or any information on his parents besides what I received from the death record.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YWC.2ACI/5338.2.1.2 Message Board Post: Hello Shelagh, The 1901 County Leitrim census lists the following household for Michael Magarahan on Main Street in Carrigallen Town: Michael 76, farmer; Bridget, 60, wife, John, 30, Ellen, 28, Michael, 21, Mary, 19 in addition to -boarders Con O'Farrell, 28 and Francis O'Rourke, 18. This information is on the County Leitrim 1901 Census website: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml Since your Michael was deceased by 1896, this family wouldn't be yours. Listed in the same census is Bridget Magauran age 60, widow (either a spelling variation of Magarahan or a transcription variation from the original census microfilms) on Church Street in Carrigallen, no doubt the wife of Michael Magarahan listed in Griffiths Valuation on Church Street in 1856. However, living with her is a son, James, age 30 so this wouldn't be your Michael's family either since your James was older and had already emigrated from Ireland before the 1901 census. Trying to research in Ireland without a specific location of birth i.e. town/townland/civil parish and county is extremely difficult and can result in researching people with no connection to your ancestors. Few of the 1901 Irish census records are online because there is as yet no official computerisation of the microfilms. Because of the lack of census records for the 1800s in Ireland, church registers are the primary source of family research but those aren't centrally located and aren't online. Their location and availability depends on the specific place of birth of the emigrant. In addition to James and Patrick's place of birth, you really need both their parents names. As you can see there were two Michael Magarahans in the same town in Leitrim both with wives named Bridget so you need as much detail from the emigrants records where they lived after emigration to identify which family in Ireland might be "yours". You mention you have both James and Patrick's marriage certificates. However, there are other research sources you can look at to find their place of birth in Ireland in addition to those. Census records generally just help provide locations to research civil and church records in the locations where the emigrants lived. So based on James and Patrick's locations in census records you can also research: --Both James and Patrick's death certificates, civil and religious. --Their tombstones, cemetery records, and wills. Emigrants often remembered their families in Ireland in their wills. --Their children's civil and religious birth, baptism, marriage and death records. The long form birth certificates for all the children may be good sources to find where their fathers were born in Ireland. You wouldn't be able to order a birth certificate for Patrick b. 1871 because you don't have enough detail to order the cert from the General Register Office in Ireland. However, if you look at the microfilm copies of the birth indexes on order through a LDS Family History Centre for Patrick Magarahan, born 1871, you can find from that index the cert number and specific date of birth and can then give the information from the index to the General Register Office so they can issue the cert for you based on that index information. The LDS microfilms may also include the actual cert copy itself -- some of the certs themselves are included and some aren't. But you'd need to look at the microfilm indexes first to get the information. The civil records are in date order so you can begin with 1871 and if you don't find it there, go to 1870 and 1872. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YWC.2ACI/5338.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Hello Shelagh, Griffiths Valuation wasn't a census. It was a property tax valuation that was done in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. Many people leased/owned property that wasn't of sufficient value to be included in Griffiths for taxation purposes. Many people listed in Griffiths as leasing property in turn sub-leased it to others not listed in the Valuation. It's only a very general guide of a selected per centage of the population. So the ten Magarahans in Leitrim and two in Fermanagh don't absolutely reflect the full range of families of that surname. Griffiths Valuation was done in County Leitrim in 1856 and lists two Michael Magarahans in Carrigallen. One is on Main Street and the other on Church Street. Unfortunately, however, neither one is yours. I've posted additional follow-up information to Adrian's post also. Regards. Eilís O'Hara Ireland
