    3. I signed up for the free access, and now I am looking at and saving original Griffith's Valuation Images plus images of the Griffith's Maps!! Simply click on Irish Origins after you log on, then do a last name search. One of the matching choices (if your ancestor is listed) will be Griffiths. Good luck! This is great! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YWC.2ACI/5382.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Ross, Leitrim Genealogy is a research service for County Leitrim which provides fee-based research services. It's not an online source for you to research from Cloone RC Church registers, for example. Its list of parish registers and dates are the registers which the Genealogy Centre itself has access to and which they use for their fee-based research service. However, if you do want to research Cloone RC registers, even though you haven't as yet determined from Mary and her children's civil and church records in the US who her parents were and the town/townland where she was born in County Leitrim, you can look at those registers yourself on microfilm on order through a LDS Family History Centre. It's film#1279223 item 12-14 but verify those numbers through LDS before ordering. The LDS charge $5.50 (US currency) for each film. Alternately, you can complete research in Mary's civil and church records in the US to find her parents names as well as her specific place of birth in County Leitrim. The records would include: a) Mary's civil and church marriage and death records, her obituary, cemetery record, will and possibly her US naturalisation records if she personally applied for US citizenship. b) Her children's civil and church birth, baptism, marriage and death records which may include her place of birth in County Leitrim. If you also believe Thomas and Patrick Fox might be her brothers, you can also research their civil and church records in the US, as well as their children's, (see list above for all), in addition to Thomas and Patrick's US naturalisation records, to identify Thomas and Patrick's parents names and place of birth in Ireland, i.e.the town/townland, civil parish and county. All the siblings -- if they are indeed siblings -- may not have been born in the same location. The siblings may also appear as sponsors for their other siblings marriages or even the baptisms of their respective children which may be another indication of their family relationship. Once you have the specific location(s) of birth and parents names, you can then identify if available church registers for that location might indeed include their baptismal information as well as where and how those registers might be accessed. Leitrim 29-Sept-1823 and that she was Catholic. Figuring out where she was born and who were her parents are the next steps. I was hoping I might stumble across someone who had already researched a part of the FOX family in Co. Leitrim that included her. I believe that Patrick and Thomas FOX were her brothers; I'm also trying to confirm that. I've looked for any of the three of them in the passenger lists, but so far I haven't found anything I can say for sure is them. I'm also going to look for naturalization papers for them to see what else I can turn up. Thanks for your interest and suggestions, Ross

There are about 1500 towns and townlands. What were her parents names and religious denomination? There are no census records for Ireland for the 1800s and civil registration didn't start until 1864 (Protestant marriages in 1845). Church registers for her specific location of birth in County Leitrim and religious denomination would be the source for her baptismal information. Immigration records would be in the US and would consist of ships passenger lists or US naturalisation records. Ships passenger lists were handed in at the port of arrival. Regards. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/1798.3774.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Donna, What you'll be looking for in their US records is the town/townland, civil parish and county of birth. Here's an explanation of those Irish civil divisions: http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=2435 There are about 64,000 towns/townlands in 32 counties. Here's a map showing the counties: http://philnorf.tripod.com/ireland.htm There are no census records in Ireland for the 1800s and civil registration didn't start until 1864 so church registers for the specific town/townland, civil parish and county would be your source for family research. The registers aren't centralised or computerised. Their availability and how they can be accessed depends on the religious denomination and birth location. In addition to the emigrant(s) and their children's civil and church records, you can also research the following records for the emigrant(s): --obituaries --tombstones --wills --cemetery records --US naturalisation records esp. the first papers or initial petition for US citizenship Regards. 1. McGowans in Leitrim
    2. Rosemary Cairns
    3. Part of my family comes from Kinlough, in Co. Leitrim. There are many McGowans in this area. So if you need a parish location, you might try Rossinver parish. Manorhamilton was the nearest large area where records were filed. There are a number of McGowans listed in IGI, if you haven't checked it. Rosemary Cairns I, too, am looking for McGowan's in Leitrim. Supposedly, it is quite a common name, equivalent to "Smith". Some of my information has come from my grandfather's "autobiography", which has been generally reliable; the rest from records I've been able to dig up. My great-grandmother was Ellen E. McGowan of Manorhamiton, Leitrim. IRE. Share my world in pictures on Webshots. I looked at film 1279224 which has church records for Mohill, Co Leitrim. The baptism index shows one James Kelly record on page 50 as follows; 25 Oct 1857,Baptism James Kelly, son of James Kelly and Biddy Jackson. Sponsors were Francis Kelly and Catherine Jackson. The marriage index showed two marriages but much later. page 91, 8 Feb 1869, James Kelly married Catherine Conlon. Wit, Patrick Scallen? and Johann McWeiny?? (wit names handwtiting very bad, I am guessing on spelling) Page 104, 9 June 1878. Should have been James Kelly and Jane Reilly according to the index. However the page showed James Reilly and Jane Reilly. Wit was James Burbage? and C____?? ( I really couldnt read them too well.) One of the names must bewritten in error. As I emailed before, I suggest you go back to the film, ask the FHC for a Latin-English booklet of words and take your time looking at the entries. Soon they will start to make sense. Contact me if you need anything further. Jack

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/1798.3774.2 Message Board Post: Hello Donna, You really can't make any determination by surname about what's "Irish" and what isn't although it's very commonly done outside Ireland. The surname Jagoe, for example, is indeed found in Ireland and also has variations of Jago, Iago, Igo, Igoe among others. Your best strategy for finding your husband's gggrandparents birth location in Ireland is to research their and their children's US census records and then their civil and church records in the US. You should be able to find if they originated in Ireland in the census because their country of birth is noted. With the family information from the US census records, you can then research their civil and church records in the locations where they lived in the census to find specifically where in Ireland they were born, i.e. the town/townland, civil parish and county.
