Laghty Townland, Cloonclare Civil Parish, Drumahaire Barony: William Parker 60, carpenter, Jane 50, Mary A. 20, seamstress, Fred Lavender(10mo.) nephew (possibly gs) You'd need to know the date of the marriage to find the civil marriage record as well as Gordon Parker's birth date to find the civil birth record. There are no Stinsons listed in Leitrim in the 1901 census. Difficult to know where the descendants might be. The last Irish census is 1911 and it's not computerised but only available on microfilm. Hello, I am new to the list and thought I'd post my interests, see if anyone out there is researching the same. I have: John GILHOOLY b. unknown d. before Aug 1891. married Ellen CALLAGHAN b. unknown. John is listed on his son's death cert in Scotland as a Roof thatcher, however on his son's marriage cert in Ireland he is listed as a labourer. Im guessing a roof thatcher would be classed as a labourer? John and Ellen had three children that I know of in Ballinamore. I don't know if there are any more, but I guess it's a distinct possibility. Children: - John GILHOOLY b. 8 Aug 1869 - James GILHOOLY b. 2 Apr 1872 - Mary GILHOOLY b. 14 Jul 1874 I know nothing more of James and Mary (other than James may have migrated to Scotland) At somepoint John (1869) must have come to Belfast, he married Mary Jane Sandlin (registered as Jane Sands on Marriage cert) in Belfast on the 3rd Aug 1891. John's father John is listed as deceased. Around about 1896 John, Mary Jane and children migrated to Glasgow, Scotland. They lived the rest of their lives there. John was a tailor by occupation, although there were periods in Scotland when he seems to have been unable to get tailoring work and had to take various jobs. He died in 1935. His wife lived until 1953 and died in London whilst visiting her son. Any help anyone can give me regarding Gilhooly's in Ballinamore would be much appreciated. I seem to be getting nowhere with them. I have no idea if John Gilhooly (snr) and Ellen Callaghan were from ballinamore or not. My mother had always thought the Gilhoolys were from Sligo, so it came as a big surprise to realise they where from Leitrim. John (1869) married in the catholic church, so I can only assume that the Gilhoolys were catholic. His wife's siblings all married in the church of Ireland. Would a marriage record for John and Ellen be a realistic possibility? All I know is that they must have married pre 1869. Though I can't be sure how far back as I don't know if John (1869) was the eldest. Regards Morag Cameron

Others have suggested this, too, thank you -- although I believe I have looked at all the passenger lists everywhere. I can, of course, find James McNamara of the right age frame, but if there's no one with him, no way to know he's mine. I can't remember specifically at the moment, but it seems to me that Mulvey isn't all that numerous, and I don't believe I have ever found another Sarah Mulvey (have looked for her traveling with Thomas Mulvey, none of those). I have tracked the 3 McNamara families in Wheeling in the same time frame, but so far, no cigar as far as linking them up. Thanks! Nancy

Yes, I have been all over the West Virginia sites, Ohio Valley, Ohio County, etc. And I do know that WV wasn't WV at the time, it was Virginia. The marriage date was probably 1851, being that they had their first child in 1852. And yes, their ages do vary throughout the various censuses, but that is a pretty big jump. In 1851 they should only have been about 19-21ish, so the 30-35 seems to be too much of a jump. But the 1851 is intriguing! because that is what I would expect. After I sent this letter, I found a website for the Diocese of Wheeling, and I am hopeful this time! because they actually have a heritage center, including record archives, open to the public. So maybe I will find out the county they are from. I have called them for six years, and they are always moving to a new building, dealing with a flood, etc etc etc, and unable to help me, but will "soon," and no, I can't do it on my own; so no volunteers can help me out there. But I will actually be in the area in September, so I am praying mightily that it doesn't just say "Ireland" as place of birth. I can find no other Sarah and James McNamara as a couple on the ships, although I know that the passenger lists are not complete. And I have no way of knowing if they came over as a couple or met and married in the US. They would have been young, only 19-21 or so when they married in 1851 and the first baby came a year later. Still taking ideas! Nancy
Hi Nancy, Have you tried posting a query on the correct county for the city of Wheeling, WV Rootsweb site, asking for a volunteer to possibly look up the church records at the churches or the archdiocese archives (if they exist)? As for ages, I have one ancestor for whom I have made the following notations: 1856 28 Jan - Marriage - age 40 [b. 1815] 1870 28 Jul - Census - age 57 [b. 1812] 1880 5 Jun - Census - age 75 [b. 1805] 1885 6 Feb - Death - age 73 [b. 1811] So you can see, age wasn't a terribly important fact to 19th century persons. Most ancestors have done better, and averaged over three years, though. It could be that they just didn't remember. I would look at the births of their children, and try to figure out a marriage date from that. And then compare that with the passenger list - would the timing have been right? And then I would search the 1860 (and 1850) census to see how many James and Sarah McNamaras there are - to see how rare that is. Because it doesn't seem too rare to me, and so might be another couple on that ship. Oh - did you look at the English 1851 census for this couple? I hope others will reply, too, about some of your questions. Susan On 7/24/06, Nancy & Ted <hootmon2@earthlink.net> wrote: > Hi All, I am new to your list. Hi All, I am new to your list. I have a married couple, James McNamara b.abt 1830 in Ireland (where??) married to Sarah Mulvey b. abt 1832 in Ireland (where??). They were in Wheeling, West Virginia USA by 1852 when their first child was born. I cannot get the diocese of Wheeling to help me with church records and have darned near given up, it has been about six years now and they are still working on it. Assuming that they did indeed meet and marry in Ireland, is there anything I can learn by searching the records for Leitrim County? I do know that Sarah's father was Thomas Mulvey from her death certificate. But I have no parents, no siblings at all for James McNamara, nothing to nail these people down to anyone else. Thanks for any advice, Nancy (* I Did find one Sarah and James McNamara as a couple but these seem to be far too old. Dear Susan, "anno aetatis suae" means In the year of his or her age. I could be mistaken but I read this to mean Brigid Cooke, nee Kilkenny (or aka Kilkenny), died at age 49...that Cooke is her surname at the time of her death. I hope this helps. Thanks for the definitions - I understand that she had two last names at different times. I was trying to figure out which one would be the maiden name, so I'm sorry my question wasn't more clear. If anyone else has used Catholic church records and found death records for their families, more specifically married women, what in general was the way it was presented? Married name first? Maiden name the alias? In this case, I have only found Kilkennys in Gubbs, not Cookes, so I was thinking that Brigid Cooke married a Kilkenny. But I have no marriage record, so cannot prove it one way or the other. Later generations of Cookes had plenty of Kilkennys acting as godparents, and vice versa, so I figured they were first or second cousins, through Brigid. Thank you! Susan, here is the definition of Alias copied exactly as written in Langenscheidt "Pocket Latin Dictionary" : Alias. adv. 1 at another time; alias...alias at one time...at another time; 2 elsewhere in another way. This is the famous yellow pocket book series of language dictionaries used in schools. Barnes & Noble sell them for various languages. Gubs. Does that mean it is likely the woman who died was born with the name Brigid Cooke and married a Kilkenny, or is it the other way around? (I've been taking it to mean the former.) > Brigida Cooke alias Kilkenny Alias means 'other' in Latin. So maybe Kilkenny is Bridget's maiden name or her married name. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com http://www.connorsgenealogy.net
> Are there other versions of the 1901 census available somewhere? According to John Grenham's book, Tracing Your Irish Ancestors, other than LDS Family History Library, they are available in Ireland at PRONI (Northern Ireland) and at the National Archives of Ireland in Dublin. Checking another book, Irish Libraries, I found they are also part of the holdings of the Kilkenny County Library in Kilkenny City. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com http://www.connorsgenealogy.net
