    1. [LEITRIM] More Public Hospital Records Online - Irish to New Orleans in the 1850s
    2. Hi Listers, I am once again joining your list temporarily to tell you I have posted some more admission records from Charity Hospital in New Orleans. I have just completed and posted the months of September and October, completing the year 1851 for the months of January through October. To remind you, New Orleans was one of the largest ports in the US during the mid 1800s. It was a gateway for the Irish entering the US, not only those who settled in New Orleans itself, but also for those who made their way north up the Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri Rivers to St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Iowa, and other towns. Although the population of the town was only about 116,000 people in 1850, in the next few years, over a quarter of a million immigrants arrived from Europe - the majority of whom were Irish escpaing the Great Famine. Many Irish were brought to Charity Hospital when they were sick, as this was the city's public hospital and they were too poor to pay for private medical care. As I finish two months, I have been posting the admission records to the various Irish lists and some other lists for Germany, Scotland, and some US cities like Philadelphia that were the birthplaces of many of the patients.. So far, I have probably transcribed 15,000 names. Some ships arrived infected with a typhus or some other equally devasting epidemic, and the sick passengers were brought directly from the docks to the hospital. September and October were very bad months in New Orleans for various fevers because of the hot weather and the mosquito population which soared during the hot, wet, summer months. On an average day during other times of the year, about five of the patients admitted on a given day would die sometime during their stay in the hospital. During August and September, that number would go over 70 patients during years of particularly heavy rainfall. Of course, the Irish were the most affected by this, due to the destitute and unsanitary conditions they lived in. Below is a list of the names of the patients from Co. Leitrim who were admitted to Charity Hospital in New Orleans for the months of September and October, 1851. If you see a name you would like to investigate further, please visit the New Orleans rootsweb site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm Click in the left margin under Charity Hospital, and scroll down until you see the link you want. Each admission gives the date of admission, date of death, date of discharge, ward no., name, occupation, place of birth, age, last place from, how long in NO, marital status, how long sick, disease, and sometimes a note about the patient. This info is excerpted for this county below. Sorry if the formatting disappears when it goes through email, it is copied from an Excel spreadsheet and I have no control over it. Admissions from Co. 3. The book "Shamrocks and Shepherds: The Irish of Morrow County" by John F. Kilkenny is a wonderful resource. I have the book as well as the one by Michael Whelan, "The Parish of Aughavas". Both are great. The O'Briens and Campbells are mentioned on page 49 in "Shamrocks and Shepherds". I am lucky enough to have early photos of these brave pioneers.Members of my O'Brien family still live on a ranch in Heppner, Oregon. Gail Moran

They had 10 children all suppose to have been born in Manorhamilton. My gggrandfather's name was John Clancy married Cecelia Collins abt.1820 children were: Patrick b.abt.1820,Lackey b.abt.1831, Thomas b.1833, Anne b.1833, Rose b.1838,Cecelia abt. 1839, Abbie Teresa abt.1839,Mary abt.1842, Catharine 1845 & Peter 1848. I've taken the births from census. I think John might have died in Ireland, I never found him in the U.S. The rest of the family came to the United States, Boston, about 1855. I'd appreciate any help that you could give me. Thank You for reading this posting & sorry it's so long.Pat
