    1. Re: [LEITRIM] Birth, Marriage, and Death Records
    2. HI Colleen, If you are tlaking about civil registration records that began 1864, then you would be talking about the Health Board in Carrick-on-Shannon. It is the North West Health Board. They can be contacted at this address: (078) 20308  (tele) N.W.H.B., Community Care Offices, Leitrim Road, Carick-on-Shannon The link for the General Records office and pricing can be found at this link: Click here: The General Register Office - Fees The website for Health Board Reform has this contact with an email addess: [email protected] If you are looking for anything before 1864 you would be looking at Church records, and that greatly depends on the parish for which they belonged as to what records would be available. My experience is that recods can be found dating as far back as 1825 in Leitrim. Most start at 1845. Hope that helps, Becky

    3. Colleen, What I mainly had in mind was the holdings of public libraries in Leitrim. (However, I have not had occasion to look for records for the area north of Lough Allen, so that may be different.) When I went to the library at Carrick on Shannon to ask about the transcriptions of records (including cemetery inscriptions) for Southeast Leitrim done in the 1990's by FOS, I was directed to the public library in Ballinamore. For the pre-1864 period, these are an invaluable resource, since they include tithe applotments, and, in some cases voting lists. (The 1832 lists are especially interesting, because the suffrage had been extended by the Reform Act of 1831, which qualified leaseholders with much smaller land holdings to vote.) Another person who answered you about post-1864 records is correct; civil registration information is housed in Carrick on Shannon. Parish records--if they are have survived--are normally available for all Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Ardagh, which has proved extremely cooperative in such matters. The Diocese of Kilmore--which includes Northwest Leitrim--is another matter. However, truly the best source of records for time efficiency of genealogical research is still in Dublin. At the National Library you can look at records that the Genealogical Centre would charge for them to look up records for you in Ballinamore. The Library also has excellent viewing equipment. Good luck in your search. I have come across a a few Cronyns in Canada. Except for Bishop Cronyn and his descendants, they seem to have been Catholic, although I have wondered if one lot were recent converts. If your lot were C of E, or C of Ireland, then perhaps there is a connection with ours. I don't know anything about the Bishop's siblings or what they did, so I don't know if any of the other Cronyns at Trinity were related. There were other friends and/or relations, some connected with Trinity, and they came out to Canada together. I don't know about the piano - it would have had a long and difficult trip as the Cronyns settled in what was still "frontier" Canada. I should think their early days were pretty meagre and rough, though eventually quite grand. I would be delighted to hear if you learn any more. Regards, Eve

However, I would welcome help from anyone who can provide it. Here are the details as I know them: Ambrose Rend (the surname I know him under) was born in Leitrim ca. 1814, married Elizabeth Cline, had a son William P. ca. 1840 and emigrated to Lowell, Ma ca. 1847. At some later date his wife died and he remarried Catharine Gannon, also of Leitrim. They had two sons, both born in Lowell: John, born ca. 1861 and Ambrose Joseph, born 7 Sep 1863. The family then moved to Chicago ca. 1864. Three daughters were born there: Elizabeth "Lizzie" ca. 1865, Anna ca. 1867 and Catharine ca. 1871. Again, I am hoping to find out from where in Leitrim he came, and what his original surname was (Wren, Wrenn, Rynn, Rynne, etc.?). I hope you will find this information useful. Thanks a million, Peter

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/404.3831.4208.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Peter, A number of suggestions. First of all you haven't mentioned dates so I don't know the time period you're working with. I was lucky enough to find a NYC birth record in 1866 for a child of my great great grandparents, Patrick S. Wren and Ann Murray which listed the birthplace for mother and father as Leitrim, Ireland. I have yet to be able to place them on the land in Leitrim, though all the family names including Baptismal sponsors of their children in NYC are well known in Leitrim:Wren, Murray, Hackett(Guckian), Shanley, Callaghan, Gray(Colreavy), McKeon, and Conboy. The challenge with Wren is the many spellings possible both in Leitrim and in the states:Wren, Wrenn, Wrynn, Wrin, Wrinn, Renn, Rinn, Rynn, and McCrann, McRann. As you can see it's quite challenging despite the fact it's a relatively uncommon name elsewhere (Many Wrens in North Kerry and Rynnes in Clare). I took a quick look at the Leitrim-Roscommon Home page, which has both Griffith's Valuations(c1850) and 1901 Census for Leitrim and in Griffith's there is an Ambrose McRann listed. Perhaps he's your's.

I know that he married Elizabeth Cline, but have no further information on the Cline family. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
