    1. McGirl Family in New York and Rhode Island
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McGirl and Solomon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/4997 Message Board Post: Hello all This is what I have found out about my grandmothers family. First of all she immigrated here from england when she was 2 years old. she grew up in rhode island and then she married a african man. his name was John Solomon, they had 5 sons (Edwin, Michael, Ralph, George & Stanley) they lived in brooklyn New York. I was told that she was disowned by her family because of her marriage to this african man. Anyway, I dont know much about his family, but he died before I was born. My grandmother (Mary Solomon) died in 1980, I was 15 years old then. My father was Ralph Solomon he died when I was 17. the only ones that are still alive in that family is Edwin (who is suffering with alzheimers disease) and Micheal (who is just a nut) Uncle micheal told me that one time they did meet the Mcgirls in Rhode island, but was not treated quite well, so they never went back. I would like to meet these people one day. Just to talk and get to know them as my grand mothers family. I would love to here their stories of the family history, and most of all I would just love to get to know them. if you have any info, please let me know. I think my grandmother would have loved that.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/4996 Message Board Post: My name is Don McGovern. This past week I found a website at Family Tree DNA. A man by the name of Joe Donohoe has organized a group called the "Breifni Clan" where he is requesting people (actually males) with surnames from the Breifni area of Ireland to submit DNA samples to Family Tree DNA. I am no expert on Breifni but it mainly comprises County Leitrim and Cavan. I am including a link to the website here: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=T77392&special=true I requested a kit from Family Tree DNA and I am submitting my sample in the mail on Tuesday. It is very simple, the kit includes two sticks with schwabs at the end and two sample holders. You take the sticks with the schwabs and scrape the inside of your cheek in your mouth for a minute. Do the same with the second stick and schwab. The cost ranges from as low as $100 to $221 based on the number of DNA markers you test. The kit is sent back to Family Tree DNA and in a few weeks you get the results. If anyone else matches your results you will get notified of this. I am no expert on DNA so if you have any questions I would check out the website. If you have ancestors from the Leitrim or Cavan area I would encourage you to try this out. It sounds exciting. I have a couple of McGoverns from Leitrim I would like to submit a sample to see if we are related. Good luck in your search, Don McGovern my McGovern website: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/c/g/Donald-S-Mcgovern-OK/

    3. I apologize, I did not know that Rootsweb/Ancestry would strip the site address from the post that I made regarding the Pilot ads. I will try again here>>> arthur dot bc dot edu slash pilot type the above into your address window- replace "dot" with a period (two places)- replace "slash" with a forward slash (one place). No spaces in the address! The site is FREE! The Irish Times also have a useful website http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/genie/index.cfm but it all starts costing money. If they were RC the the mormons can order films of most RC parish Registers unless you want a journey to the National Archives in Dublin. I am not familiar with the surname Harkin but am with McKeon. Their could be thousands
