Hi Friends, Does anyone know the exact dates of the Michael Shandley musical week-end taking place in Kiltyclogher? Also if the Manorhamilton castle is open for tours? I've written the Irish tourist board and haven't heard from them. We are planning a trip to Ireland Aug. 19th. Mary

You must be connected to the Lawrence letter, an awesome momento to those of us with ancestors mentioned in it. I recently discovered that it gives me an important clue as to why my ancestor Elizabeth Parsons came to N.Z. in 1862with her sister Catherine. You see Catherine Parsons married a John Bleakley soon after arriving here, the breakthrough came when I realised that this was the same Johnny Bleakley that is discussed in the letter. I have a John McGOWAN born about 1796 in Leitrim. He married a lady named Sarah (maybe LAVENDER) from Hilgay Norfolk England. So far, only one child has been found - Margaret born about 1841 in Ireland. In between 1841 and 1861 John was in India serving in the Army. In 1861 John appears on the London Census and is living at 7 Bruton Street. He is then a fishing Tackle Maker. Sarah is still alive. In 1866 Margaret married John BYRNE and they had 2 children. Word has it that they went to South Africa with John BYRNE in a diplomatic job. In the 1871 Census John & Sarah are still there. Also are Margaret & John's two children. In the 1881 Census John is still living at Bruton Street but he is a widower. Would love to hear from anyone who has this family. I thought someone may be interested in this part of an email sent to me; "According to the Militia pages of The Land Forces of Great Britain, the Empire and Commonwealth web site [and links] at www[dot]regiments[dot]org/milhist/uk/lists/mvcxire[dot]htm the 10th, or Leitrim Militia was raised at Carrick on-Shannon in 1793 and although the regiment itself was finally disbanded in 1889, by then it appears it had become absorbed as the 8th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade [The Prince Consorts Own]; one of the ancestral regiments of today's Royal Green Jackets." Further to this there is an article on http://www[dot]mctiernan[dot]com/defend1[dot]htm called Defenderism in Leitrim during the 1790's (1st Half) by Rev. Liam Kelly. Which deals with this period. The URL Http://www[dot]from-ireland[dot]net/history/allcounties/1832military[dot]htm has an article entitled '1832 Military Index' which is not comprehensive and is based on documents held on the shelves in the National Archives of Ireland are some indices - books - and these books are indexed in a number of ways - the general title is 'Index of Official Papers' 47 Leitrim Militia. Ann Austin from Co. Leitrim married John Spellman from Co. Mayo around 1835 or 1836 most likely after he left Ireland. Their children Mary Ann and James were born in St. Albans, Vermont. I suspect Ann and John came by way of Canada. John Spellman left a wife Catherine "X" and three children, Patrick (Paul), Michael and Bridget Spellman Craig in Ireland before coming to the United States and starting a new family. They later found him in Rock Run Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. He then gave them money to begin farming in Iowa. I'm looking for any information regarding Ann Austin or John's first family. You will have to veiw the originals and take out what is relevant to you. Try the Irish Times website by changing the [dot] to . http://scripts[dot]ireland[dot]com/ancestor/genie/index[dot]cfm This site will give you a list of numerous other documents to veiw and geneological help is at hand. While there look in HAYES and find out if other documents are available. finally do not forget the archives held in London, Belfast and Edinburgh et cetera; there are gems held at these also. I have just been looking at records of Customs, Revenue Police, Chelsea Pensioners and Militia held at PRO Kew {London}. Remember as you go back in time it willget more difficult to find individuals and relationships, but general family details are still present.
