Louise at [email protected] writes: << I cannot find Lisgundy, Garadice P.O. on my Ireland map or on a map online. Could someone help me and tell me where it is located? >> Louise, There are two Garadice townlands in Co. Leitrim but, fortunately, only one of them has a post office. That Garadice is (not surprisingly) on the north shore of Garadice Lough, 3 miles nearly due East of Ballinamore town, in Drumreilly (Lower) civil parish. I believe that someone, sometime, misread and switched a couple of letters in your townland's name. The townland of Lisgruddy (if you switch the ru to a ur, and read the r like an n........then you get Lisgunddy - pretty close to your spelling. The townland of Lisgruddy lies directly north of Garadice townland, and actually touches it. So the main part of Lisgruddy would be less than a mile north of the center of Garadice townland/village. Although there are various other "Lis-" townlands in Co. Leitrim, this one is by far the closest in spelling (and, in geography <gr>). Surnames: Cassidy, Flynn, Keegan, Lee & McDermott Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/5008.2 Message Board Post: Nancy: You might want to use land records to narrow down your search: Griffiths Valuation in 1856 has both a Bridget and a Mathew Torphy holding land in the townland of Drumcullion in Drumreilly Parish. These are the only Torphys listed in all the Parish (as you probably know, it is not a typical Leitrim name). These are very likely to be the ancestors of your family. Of the approximately nine families in Drumcullion, four are Keegans; Felix, two Francis’ (could be the same person or a different one) and Rose. By the 1901 census, there are no Torpys in Drumcullion, only the 60 year old William in Corramahan a few miles away. There are still four Keegan holdings in the townland: Bridget, Felix (the same one ?), Pat, and a 66 year old widow Mary, who could be your “Maria” (the age would be right). The records available on the internet do not allow you to trace particular holdings, however the information is available from the Irish Valuation Office. For a price you can order the pages that will show how land changed hands over the generations. You say that you have the baptismal record but you don’t mention a church. Did you really mean to say minister rather than priest ? The same church might have the marriage records that would indicate a Keegan Torphy connection. The godparents are most likely to be siblings of either of the parents. Good luck from another Keegan (from the northern art of Drumreilly Parish) Sharon

Anyway, even if your name is now Redican, don't forget to look for Rodican and vice versa, if your family is from Leitrim. By the way, if anyone knows more about Andrew, Andrew and James, I'd love to know. My grandfather was a remarkable man, and I want to know more about his family. Mary Ann: Are you the person related to Bishop of Providence, Russell J. McVinney, who was related to the Blessings? I know a Matt Blessing here in RI whom I know. A young teacher. We also had a priest named Monsigneur Blessing (Peter?), born at end of 19th c., probably (therefore) related to the bishop (RI has fewer than a million...substantially fewer back then!). Jane in RI
Dear Listers, I'm hoping that someone from north Leitrim might know of any living descendants of Bartholomew McGrath (d. 1885) & wife Sarah Nolan (d. 1882). Also living descendants of Bernard/Bryan Regan (d. 1899) & wife Ann Connolly (d. 1911). These families lived in the Glenaniff valley at Rossinver. We know that Teresa Regan, who died in 2001, was the Regan family historian, but we didn't make contact with her before she died. We're hoping that her research was inherited by a relation in the area. My wife is descended from both families. Any help in making contact with McGrath or Regan descendants would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Bill Bray Midlothian, Virginia USA
