My great-grandfather was JOHN McGIRL. Came to Rhode Island, USA, from Leitrim 1865-1870. He was born about 1845, but the church records held by Leitrin (Ballinamore) Heritage Center, don't have records of him, nor of his known brothers. His brothers - also came to R.I. - were PATRICK, THOMAS and JAMES. All I know about the parents is that their names were THOMAS and MARY McGIRL. Would love to make a connection to any other siblings they had, and to discover their mother's maiden name, and their home place in Leitrim!

My Gurl family is posted on the Ancestry World Tree if you would like to take a peek. I couldn't find anything on Farrell or Annie but I did find Thomas living with Mary Jane on the 1920 census. They are in Worcester, MA. Both are widowed. Mary Jane has some children living with her also. I can send you the census image if you like. I have been able to track the arrival of my McGurl inlaws to around 1859-1860. They settled in PA. I have not been able to find out where in Ireland the originated. Has it been your experience that most McGurl's hail from Leitrim? I have read on other sites where the name originated in Donegal. The original Irish name is Mac Fhearghail (pronouced Mac Garrell) from the first name Flearghal meaning valiant.
Good morning Leitrim listers. Ray Whittington has again provided some new records for the LeitrimGenWeb site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllet/ Find military rosters and title applotments for Mohill in the newest submittals. I hope you all enjoy these records and find them useful to your research. Finally, I hope you will all chip in with copies of your own records. My own family research in Leitrim is at a standstill, in part because my Kelly family left leitrim so long ago (1500s) that few direct records of their passing still exist. So it becomes my passion to find those records that do still exist. Have a great weekend all, and do provide records when you can. One never knows when a familiar name will pop up on an old record. Anyone with information - > I'd love to know more about this subject! > Thanks, > Mary Ellen Oh, my! With regard to your interest in the Quakers of Ireland... When I was growing up, I had an icky neighbor who was a Quaker. He was peculiar and mean. Therefore, my thoughts about the Quakers was not a positive one. However, in the past 5 years I have learned how many lives these good, peaceful people saved during the Starvation of the 1850s in Ireland. Though they had nothing to gain (other peoples saw the Starvation ("Famine") as a just punishment for the idol worshipers, the Roman Catholic Papists. There are several short texts/monographs (?) on the subject which helped me to appreciate their true Christian virtues. Perhaps the Irish Press? I was so happy to learn that my feelings towards the Quakers were skewed by my childhood perceptions of just one cranky neighbor. I am so grateful to these good women and men who cared for the bodies and lives of our people whose bodies were being punished by an act of God that was attributed to His punishment. The Book of Job was not a part of the Biblical knowledge of the British at that time. Have to run. Or I'd go on!!! Regards, Jane in RI

Hi- I am new to the list. I have a ggrandmother who was born in Drumshanbo, Ellen O'Connor, who was a Quaker. As far as I know, she became a Quaker in Ireland. She is the daughter of Michael O'Connor and she had a half-sister, Catherine. They emigrated to the US (I believe New Hampshire first and then to Salem, Mass. USA) - anyway, they moved in the mid 1880's. I was curious about this "Quaker" business and whether the Drumshanbo area was a place with other fundamentalist sorts of religions. The rest of my Irish ancestors came from Southwest Ireland and were true believers in the Roman Catholic church. Anyone with information - I'd love to know more about this subject!
