I wish to thank all those who helped with excellent ideas for restoring FTM files to new system. The "new" floppy drive was faulty but even so eventually we had to "install" the old hard drive as a secondary drive & copy files from it back to new hard drive. All is working ok now & I will back up on HDD, CDRW & floppies & keep a further copy in the safe---recalling the story of the chap who backed up every where but then his house burnt down.
