    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: KathrynBryant1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2629/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to trace any information about my ancestors. They were French Hugenots living in I beleive Portarlington. My grandfather Edward Gerrard Rabbette or Edward Gerard Rabbett was born in September 1901 in Portarlington. His father was also Edward Gerrard Rabbette and could have been the other variation as above. I have been told that at some point my great grandfather was a Police Inspector. I have no idea when great granddad and great grandma were born or where they lived exactly. I don't know if anyone has any knowledge, obviously through history as to any info on this family. I have also been told that my great grandparents left their land etc to the Church. I would be ever so grateful if anyone can throw me a lifeline please. I know it is probably a long shot but hope and pray someone can come up with some info. Regards Kathryn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Both were armed, paramilitary forces whose members were stationed around Ireland and were responsible for, among other things, gathering intelligence, enforcing civil law and acting as census enumerators. Approximately 85,000 men served between 1816 and the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. Every man who joined, or attempted to join, the RIC has a service record. These are housed in the Public Record Office in Kew, England and at the National Archives in Dublin and the PRONI in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Men are listed by year of appointment to the force. RIC recruits served in a county other than their home county and had to serve 7 years before marriage. They then transferred to another county. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Family History Centres have the records available on films #852,088 to #853,097 and #856,057 to #856,069. The index is on films #852,096 - #852,097. The records of more than 80,000 of these officers have recently been made available online on www.Ancestry.co.uk. For RIC data, see also the URLs RIC 1 RIC 2 RIC 3 Donegal RIC members are listed on Donegal RIC The registers normally give: ? full name; ? age; ? height; ? religious affiliation; ? native county; ? trade or calling; ? marital status; ? native county of wife; ? date of appointment; ? counties in which the man served; ? length of service; and ? date of retirement and/or death. The name of a wife is not given, nor any information about parents. 3. Hi Kathryn, I realise that the spelling is slightly different from your ancestors, but you may be interested to hear of one of the better-known Rabbittes here in Ireland - Pat Rabbitte, current member of parliament and former Leader of the Irish Labour Party. He was born in Co. Mayo, and I note from Liam's earlier reply that there is a cluster of Rabbetts in Co. Mayo. Anyway, for what it's worth you may wish to browse the following links:- http://www.labour.ie/patrabbitte/biography.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Rabbitte Regards and good luck with your research, John > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 19:26:08 +0000 > Subject: [LAOIS] THE RABBETTE OR RABBETT FAMILY FROM PORTARLINGTON > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: KathrynBryant1 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2629/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am trying to trace any information about my ancestors.
