    1. Re: [LAOIS] Meagles Surname
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: glaspaircs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.lex.general/2801.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you researched all the records for Michael Meagles, eg. all his US census records, civil and church marriage and death records, tombstone, will, obituary, US naturalisation records, etc. and all say the surname is Meagles? That's not a surname that exists in Ireland, it looks more like a garbled version of the surname probably from his first census record in the US when the enumerator couldn't understand his Irish accent? But aside from the surname you need to research all his civil and church records in the US to find out where in Queens County his was born and his parents name as well as his date of birth and religious denomination. There are no civil birth records in Ireland before 1864 and no surviving census records before 1901. Church records for his birth location in Laois (Queens County) would be the possible source for a baptismal record but not all the church records survive for all years or for all religious denominations. There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlands in Laois (Queens County) at the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and select Queens County as your search county from the drop down menu.
