    3. Freda, have you looked in the Mormon's IGI at their FamilySearch website? The IGI contains many records extracted from filmed Irish civil registration records. Civil birth records in Ireland began in 1864. There might have been Gunn children born between 1864 and 1870 in Queens County (today, Laois) who appear in civil registration. It sounds like you have already gotten the actual certificates. The certificate has more information than just "Bellegrove", "Bellegrive Farm" or "Bellygrove" for the residence. The district in which the registration appears tells you what part of Laois it was. That information about the district appears at the top of the page, so if your copy includes only the part of the page with the entry of interest to you, you might miss it. The Registrar's District is the location recorded in the IGI. I see 2 possibilities for Gunns in Laois during the 1860s in the IGI: (1) children of John Gunn and Mary Sutherland listed with births in Emo district in 1864 (Mary), 1866 (Jennet) and 1868 (William) (2) children of William Gunn and Margaret Polson in Abbeyleix district in 1865 (Charlotte), 1866 (Alexander) and 1868 (John) Even if you cannot easily find Bellegrove, the district gives you an idea of where you should be looking for a Presbyterian congregation - not that there were that many in Laois! A quick Google search with the words Bellegrove and Abbeyleix turns up the Laois IGP webpage at http://www.igp-web.com/laois/records.htm, which shows Bellegrove as a townland with its own webpage at http://www.igp-web.com/laois/townlands/Bellegrove.htm. That indicates the townland of Bellegrove is in the civil parish of Lea, which is in the extreme northeast corner of County Laois, with Offaly (old Kings County) to the north and County Kildare to the east. This area is closer to Emo than to Abbeyleix, so I am guessing the Gunns from Emo are your relatives, although I would not rule out a connection to the other family in Abbeyleix district. Emo was a Registrar's District in the larger district of Mountmellick, in which Poor Law Union the townland of Bellegrove was situated. At the time of Griffith's Valuation (roughly 1850), George Adair owned a large portion of the townland, which in total had about 702 acres. The corresponding Ordnance Survey map from that era shows the townland of Bellegrove with a house called "Belle Grove" situated within it. The house is surrounded by many trees on the old OS map. If you go to Google maps http://maps.google.com/ and enter Bellegrove Laois, you will see where Bellegrove townland is located. Zoom out to get the bigger picture. The towns of Ballybrittas, Portarlington and Portlaois are near and to the northwest. The town of Emo is due west about 2 or 3 miles, and Mountmellick is almost due west about 7 miles maybe (as the crow flies). If you click on Satellite at Google maps, you can see how the land is divided into fields. It is sometimes possible to correlate the old Ordnance Survey maps with roads and fields on the satellite image to pinpoint property exactly. In this case, the resolution is not as good as just to the west in Ballybrittas. If you Google "Belle Grove" Laois you will find more. For example, Belle Grove also has a page at http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/cgi-bin/viewsite.cgi?siteid=191. Click on Map Image or Aerial Image - the aerial image is much better than the Google satellite image! You can see the roof of houses quite clearly. The town of Mountmellick had a Presbyterian congregation (the only one in Laois from what I can tell) whose records began in 1849. That is one possibility for your research. Someone else will have to tell you where those records might be found today. Good luck with your search!
