All British military information in Ireland went to the British Home Office when Ireland became the Free State in 1922 and then the British Home Office transferred it to Kew. It's very difficult in Ireland to find any information about the British military when they were here and so there wouldn't be any list of military dead locally. There's an extremely high likelihood he died of disease as a result of the Famine. During the Famine years people were immediately buried to try to stem the spread of diseases. There are numerous Famine graves in Ivy Chapel about 1 1/2 miles outside Mountmellick but those were I believe primarily local people who died either from starvation or disease. It's very unlikely the British military would have been buried there in mass graves with the locals. If you know where he married in Canada, eg. the name of the church, you could contact them to see if there's any mention in the church marriage records of his religious denomination or baptismal information. It is unlikely he was Catholic but the marriage record may confirm for you what his religious denomination actually was and where he was baptised in England. Regards.
